Anything to hunt in the summer?
What animals are there available to hunt during the summer? I don't want any exotic sheep, but I'm not opposed to exotics as long as they are affordable and somewhat of a challenge and fun to hunt. I'd like something with antlers or horns and that takes up a bit more room on the wall than a deer (something the size of a red stag would be nice). Any suggestions, or does this animal not exist?

I used to hunt Blacktails in California in Aug when I was stationed there. I always managed to find a buck on either the Cache Creek Wildlife Area or the Mendecino National Forest north of Napa. I also did some hunting by Placerville and filled a couple tags out there. Pigs are available year round and Cache Creek had some of those as well.

But, that was several years ago and I don't know how the hunting is there now.

Go down to Texas and Hunt Nilgai. They are fun and they cook up great on the grill too. The King Ranch would be were I would go.

I would do that in spring or fall. It is pretty toasty down there in the South Texas summer. Of course, if you have tried it then you may have found conditions to be just fine.

I hunt in South Texas, but further west (closer to Laredo). Until the recent cold fronts it has been easily over 100 degrees on many days.

If I head that way (King Ranch area) in the summer it is to go to the beach! Cool

Grab a .22LR, go kill some rabbits. For a real challenge, try unscoped at 50 yards. Nothing hones your shooting skills like cottontails at 50 yards. They move like lightning and are hard to spot. They cook up fantastic. Roast rabbit with homemade stuffing and mashed potatoes and gravy is good eating! That's how I spend my summers, but then again, I can't afford Africa.

As long as you are not opposed to exotics, why not try a hunt for axis deer here in Texas? A good percentage of axis bucks are in rut during the summer and they are a challenge to hunt. Not bad eating either. Many, many ranches/outfitters around so prices are competitive. Good luck
