Eland SlayerTexas: Hill Country cull buck.....
I took out a great cull buck yesterday evening at our lease in Mason County. Believe it or not.....this small bodied buck is 6.5 years old judging by his tooth wear. He dressed out at only 101 lbs, meaning he was about 135 live weight. He has heavy bases but loses his mass quickly. The rut was in full swing this weekend in the hill country....and I shot him while he was chasing a doe. I'm glad he didn't get a chance to spread any more of his no-browtine-having genes.....
He was a fighter too.....notice the split ear on his left side.....

Bobby TomekNicely done!

And while he may be a cull, he's definitely a unique trophy.
Now how about a little info on the gun/load/range, etc.?

Eland SlayerI took him from a pop-up blind at around 50 yards with my Browning A-Bolt .300 WSM using 180 gr. Winchester XP3 ammunition. I punched him center-shoulder and he sat on his butt and did a perfect flip onto his back.....very dramatic kill shot.

gabe mNicely done. A couple of years ago my father'nlaw had a lease just north of Brady, which I think would be near your area. I enjoyed hunting there, and the food at Hard-8 Barbq is hard to beat!

No, he was barely 12". Mason County does not have antler restrictions.....but even if it did, we're on the MLD program and are exempt from antler restrictions.

Bob in TXCongrats on the buck. It is time for some venison chile!
You are probably seeing pre-rut activity up there.
Good Hunting,
Bob
