Hunting 'Apps'
I am curious who uses hunting 'apps' and which you use? Which did you try and find to be useless? Do you use free apps or pay?

The only one I use currently is HuntStand. It's free.

I've recently seen an app that allows one to score bucks from their game cam photos. Seems kinda silly to me.

What else is out there that might be helpful and not so much a gimmick?

Hey Ann, I have a couple apps that I've found useful for hunting and shooting. First is the CarryMap application that shows land ownership. It's not quite as nice as the dedicated ownership chip in my GPS from Kirsch's Outdoors, but it's decent enough and I always have it. Second, which I use less, is the Strelock ballistics app. With good input parameters, it seems to match my real-world results fairly well.

After doing a fair amount of online research and checking reviews I went with the Gaia App - Premium. I have been very happy with the simplicity of use, dependability and mapsets available. I have not used other apps or a GPS chip, so I have nothing to compare it to.

I would guess that you need internet or phone service to use these apps. I'm going to be in back country of CO. not much phone service I think. Am I correct?

No. In general, the phone apps can work in "offline" mode (no internet/no cell) by using maps stored on a phone ahead of time. Select the area you plan to travel and the level of detail you want to be able to zoom in to (more detail takes up more memory), then save it to phone memory. The maps are now on the phone and will function without cell service but rely on the phone GPS function instead.

I turn my phone cell service off in those places to save from eating up the battery by roaming. I also take lot of pictures/video with the phone while out on a day hunt so I carry a small external USB cell charger pack.

I used Onyx on a Pronghorn hunt recently. It worked great! Now, I won’t leave home without it!
