Ted, were they on the Missouri or Arkansas end of the St. Francis? I still can't believe Mo frowns on hunting them, but is OK with shoot on sight.

Hog hunting is big in south east Missouri

Ted, yeah I was surprised when I got that message from the MDC. I sent them an email about being able to shoot them if I saw them in a wildlife area I was going to visit. They were quick to respond with, "We highly discourage the hunting of hogs in Missouri. You can shoot on sight, but we feel hunting them may interfere with our efforts to solve the problem. We may have an area baited in order to trap or kill a full sounder, but hunting will scatter them or make them nocturnal. Neither is desired by the MDC.". They have since modified the web site to reflect this. They also changed the deer flyer to say the same thing.

It is not illegal, they just don't like it. A wildlife biologist friend of mine says that is the new philosophy in states where they are not already heavily populated. I think it's stupid, but who am I. I believe in shoot on site, as I hunt them. It is more fun. They are not big in the western part of the state where my land is, but they are in a close wildlife area, thus my question to them.

That is the tact that some of the not hog infested states are taking as well. We don't want them, so we will discourage anyone hunting them.

Hunting them places value on them that is not wanted. Hogs are so destructive that they'll ruin an ecosystem in a few days that it took conservationists years to recover.
