Inexpensive cow or spike elk hunt this year

chuck375Inexpensive cow or spike elk hunt this year
Hi all, due to recent health reasons (mine) even though my sons and I have been shooting this year, I didn't do anything for hunting season this year. My youngest son (18) is a bit disappointed but understanding. So I'm looking to surprise him and looking for a relatively inexpensive ($2000 or under) cow or spike bull elk hunt in either Colorado (where we live), New Mexico or Wyoming (somewhere we can drive to) for my son that has a very high success ratio but isn't shooting "elk in a barrel". So please PM me if you're either an outfitter or you can recommend one to me.
Hopefully I'll be better next year and all three of us (my oldest son is in the 3rd Ranger Battalion so he couldn't hunt elk this year) will go elk hunting together next year.
Thanks much,
Chuck

Paul BWell, I did the cow elk hunt with Kiowa starting on last saturday. I never saw so damn many bull elk in my life. Several herds had 20 to 30 bulls in them most 5x5 or better. I got my my cow on the first morning with my .35 Whelen. First game animal taken with that rifle. Bullet was the Barnes 225 gr. TSX and it was impressive. That cow hit the ground so darn hard she bounced. Like my antelope hunt with them, it was over way too soon as most hunts seem to be anyway. I'l be booking another hunt of some kind with them next uear, probably antelope again as my wife wants to try hunting one.

chuck375Thanks Paul sounds great! My youngest son Eric (18 years old) is taking his 270 out for a cow elk with Kiowa the weekend of 20 January.
Looking forward to seeing him get his first elk!
Thanks again,
Chuck

chuck375Hi Ted, Eric got his cow elk with Kiowa, I guess a real nice one this morning at 8:00. It was the first day of the hunt. His Mom went with him as the photographer since I'm not well yet, sounds like they had a blast and were very excited.
I had a CRT/ICD implanted for my heart condition last week and am already feeling a lot better. I plan to both go on an elk hunt with them next year as well as chase a good bull in my local mountains. If I feel as good as I hope to by summer, I plan to book a brown bear hunt for myself.
I can't thank you enough for your recommendation and help.

chuck375As you can tell by the picture above Eric was pumped lol! It was 40 degrees, so no snow. His Mom enjoyed the whole thing. Who knows, maybe she'll go with me on safari. I talked her into going to the SCI conference next year.

VenandiTim took me on this hunt. I don't know how I rated having the 'head honcho' of Kiowa as my guide. Steve was with me several times in the past. They're all a great bunch of guys.
It was 63 degrees and sunny in Raton. Temps were in the 40's at the ranch the morning of the hunt so the snow was probably gone by afternoon. And then I come home to grey skies, dirty snow and -15 below temps. I wish I could have turned around and gone back for another.
Eric's cow looks
HUGE compared to mine. I showed the pictures to one of my so-called "friends" who said it looked like I could eat the elk in one meal. Dressed weight was 295 pounds so she probably weighed 400 on the hoof. I probably ended up with about 160 pounds of meat.

22 January 2011, 21:37
chuck375He hunted the Vermejo Ranch. He and his Mom stayed in Raton.

GaryVAThank You

If my son doesn't hit the Kentucky lottery, I may take him there for a cow elk.
25 January 2011, 11:26
chuck375If you do, have him practice shooting off hand, kneeling and with a rest (truck hood) and shooting relatively quickly. We shoot cans at 25 yards and water jugs at 100 yards and try to get off three quick shots. It's a lot of fun and great practice for shooting at game. Once our guns are sighted in we don't shoot from the bench unless I'm doing load development. But you probably knew all that ...

Chuck

Paul BChuck. Glad to see your son's hunt worked out well for him. His cow is a lot bigger than mine was. Dunno if I'll go for antelope or elk again this year. Got to see how the finances work out.
MY wife wants to try her hand out on an antelope so that may be what we'll do.

Matt NormanChuck375, based on this thread a buddy and I have booked with Kiowa. I'll be on about a 12 day road trip; hog hunting in Oklahoma for two days, cow elk in Raton, then late season whitetail hunt in Iowa on the return leg.

Wow, that sounds like a fun 12 days!
Well, I already posted my success with Kiowa on my 2009 antelope and and 2010 elk hunts. I'm thinking I want to do one of those hunts again.
If you want to see my "goat" and you have Kiowa's brochure, It's on the page for southern antelope hunts. That bearded old geezer with the goat is a very happy yours truly. I got tired of trying to get an antelope tag here in Arizona. After 33 years of failing to draw, I did my hunt with Kiowa. Nothing like success.

At this moment in time, my wife and I are thinking about doing a 2x1 cow elk hunt with Kiowa. If we can swing it, that'll mean I've hunted with Tim for three years in a row. Can't give a better endorsment that that.
