My Wis. gun deer season

p dog shooterMy Wis. gun deer season
I guess I am getting old never fired a shot.
Yes I had opportunities.
The youngsters did all the killing.
Had a great time wandering through the woods carrying a rifle.
Spent time with the grandson explaining. The different paint markings on my trees.
For the up coming logging operation.
I have become very picky.
When, where and if I will shoot a deer.
I will have venison to eat as the youngster's shot plenty of deer.
It is muzzle loading season now. I plan to wander around carrying my ML.
I do not think I will shoot a deer.
But I do like wandering around the woods with a firearm.

FjoldI know the feeling; I shot a buck on opening day and missed the rest of my time in the woods since I didn't want to intrude on Wifezilla's and my daughter's chances.
It's the first deer that I've shot on my property in the three seasons that we've hunted it. Next year I'm not shooting anything until the others get a chance to tag out and maybe not at all unless it's one of the "Big Boys" that we see on the game cameras.

StonecreekLocated between Abilene and Lubbock, Texas, there have been four nice bucks taken on my property by friends and family so far this year.
Although I always carry a deer rifle afield, I enjoy shooting the hogs and am happiest when others shoot the deer.
One of the four bucks was the largest ever taken in the area, a 6x5 with a drop tine on the five side and a 23" inside spread. It gross scores 165 B&C. Couldn't be happier, for the hunter and for myself!
Four does have also been taken, both to balance the sex ratio and provide to a local charity. Maybe I'll contribute a doe or two before the season ends.

p dog shooterSomething like that might temp me.
But then I am not sure any more.

Aspen Hill AdventuresWow, Stone, that's a really nice buck!
I too have not shot anything yet. Nothing has peaked my interest so I might just shoot a doe late season.

matt salmI’m way behind on putting meat in the freezer this year with only a small buck during archery. Will try and add a few does during this muzzleloader season or the holiday hunt. Wanted to grind at least 120lbs of hamburger this year as we ran out a few months back w/ 80lbs last year.
Shoot straight, shoot often.

theback40Nothing beats being around the youngsters getting deer, PD. I get it 100%.

Uncle GrinchAt my age, I’m not a very active hunter. Can’t climb into stands due to balance issues and lack of leg strength. However I still hunt from ground blinds, although not by myself. My son and his wife are avid hunters, so I go to accompany them and enjoy their success.

My daughter who is now 40. Dam it's been 28 years since she shot her first deer.
Always said Dad you get more excited when we shoot deer then when you do.
I have grand kids coming up.
Yes I get very excited when I can help a youngster get game.

theback40Yup, that's the way it is PD.
I always try to stay calm, never rush the kids I take. One young lady, would take it to extremes.
A couple times over the years, we had bucks in front of us. She would have a good clear shots. I would wait, and wait, look at her, look at the deer. She would let her breath out, whisper to me, "I'm not ready yet"
Get back on target. I would be jumping inside, saying to myself, shoot, shoot, it wont stay forever, shoot! I will say, she never wounded a deer, always made a kill shot.

Matt NormanThat was my hunting partner that took that buck on Stonecreek's property (I took the top photo). He took it on the our last day of hunting! I took a good buck there too and did the 'Texas Trifecta': deer, hogs, and a coyote.

Baker458That's a really spectacular buck.
I always say I'm not doing any more deer mounts, but one like that I think I'd have to cape!

p dog shooterI was out in the woods everyday for ML and late doe season.
Wandering with the appropriate firearm. The only shot I fired was to unload my ML the last day of ML season.
I had a great time.
