Me and my brother are going to colorado this year on public lands to hunt elk. We are just looking for shooter bulls as this is our first time. What units would be best for first timers? These are over the counter tags so we realize there will be a crowd. Any help would be appreciated. Any other suggestions are also welcome. It'll be second season if that helps. Check on the Colorado Division of Wildlife website and look at some of their info for Elk population/ herd size. The Gunnison and Meeker areas have high numbers of elk and are open for over the counter, do some research and make some phone calls to the DOW to narrow down what kind of hunt you might be looking for, expect a lot of hunters wherever you hunt.
