Fantastic!!

But hey, I'm cursed with the left eye dominance too. I had to learn to shoot left handed as well.

Thanks for sharing your story with us! Of course, I believe it is your duty.

That buck is a dandy and I'm sure your daughter is very happy with him.

Will he be decorating your wall?

Just one thing I've noticed over the years. While at a range, it is easier for me to work a right handed bolt action for sight ins, etc. because I'm right handed even though I shoot left handed. However, while hunting, I much prefer my left bolt actions, just in case I need a quick follow up shot. It just works better for me.

You could buy your daughter a leftie Ruger M77 MKII in .270 (my first deer rifle ), and put a decelerator pad on it for about $40-60 bucks. My 12 year old nephew shot mine for 3 hours at the range with 130 bullets. No bruises, no complaints. He's kind of small framed too.

I wish my 9 year old daughter wanted to hunt with me. I'd take her next year.

35,

I have a friend who started taking his daughter hunting at 9. The first season was a little frustrating but she really has the bug now. She took an elk and whitetail in Washington state this year plus 4 animals in Africa. You can't get that silly grin off his face either.

A big congats to you and your daughter.

Regards,

Mark

That is why a Texas gal is always better than a New York City gal, unless of course it is one of the "Dixie Chicks"

God bless your daughter and congrats to her and DAD.

Whelen:

I have a left handed 10 yr old son, and althought I looked at the Rugers in Left Handed, I have noticed that Browning has a series of Left Handers, in the Micro Medallion line that are available in a lot of short action calibers, such as the 22/250, 243, 7/08. I have plans for one in each of those caliber for my son.

He was real slow to take up shooting. But a 10/22 and some fun targets have gotten him finally into it.

As a side note, I spend time experimenting with downloaded light recoiling ammo. So far with the Blue Dot powder but now working with SR 4759. If interested I will be more than happy to email you some load data in any caliber you may want that I have, which is a fair amount.

The goal is a 200 to 250 yd load, that is still very accurate and reduces recoil by 50 % or so. So far have been real successful achieving that in a wide variety of calibers, from 223s to 338 Mags, and a stray 444 Marlin.

Cheers and Happy Holidays,

35 Whelen--What part of Texas was the deer taken and where are you from? San Angelo here. Congrats to the daughter. I am left eye dominant and right handed--couldn't shoot left handed no way.

That's what I thought. Then I learned that I HAD to. Same with a bow. Weird at first, but now I cannot imagine it any other way.

Doc. No wonder we disagree over on the politics forum. I am left handed and right eyed. I am very glad that I learned at a young age to shoot right handed. To the poster above it is much easier to switch which "hand" you operate a gun with than to try and combat a off sided master eye. I now find it very awkward to try and shoot left even though I had originally started that way.

Oh, did we disagree on something? Or just post some thoughts?

I think we agreed on the Molson!

Yup. I gave her a choice between a shoulder mount, an European mount, and just horns screwed to a board and she chose the European option.

I love Rugers, but I dislike the MKII's mainly because of the bolt safety.

I have an 11 year old daughter who's not crazy about hunting, but that's more than OK with me. I love her just the same!

I've settled on Alliant 2400 for what little reduced loading I do. The reason: it's not position sensitive. With my .308 Scout rifle and the cast bullet it shoots groups that just tickle me silly.
