My daughter and I went out with the hounds yesterday. this would be her 2nd bear it took her a 7 year wait to draw a Wis tag. On wesday we were out and saw a 231lb bear taken by a 78 yoa gentaleman he shot his out of a tree.
So thursday morning we stated to check baits after a all night rain we found one that had a decent track on it but after an hr the dogs could not get any thing going. So we went to another bait and turned the dogs loose after about 30 min on cold trailing they jumped the bear about about 45 min later they sounded like they were treed.
my daughter and I headed in towards them about half mile away we worked are way through ash swamp and hazel brush. when we were about 150 yards away we could tell the dogs were not treed but were fighting the bear on the ground in about a 2 acre hazel brush thicket. As we neared visablity was 15 to 20 feet we could hear the dogs and bear going at it 50 60 feet away but could not see them.
they were about 50 feet from a big pine so my daugher climbed up to see if she could get a shot downwards thru the brush. she could not see a thing. So I crawled through the brush to about 15 feet of the bear I could then tell it was big I started to yell for my daughter to come down and shoot this bear. With the dogs and bear fighting we were having a hard time hearing each other.
I then went back to the tree got my daughter down and said we need to shoot this bear. I told her don't shoot me in the back and don't shoot any dogs. we begain working are way towards the bear. we got with in about 30 feet all we could see is a dog come running by once in a while. We crawled with in around 20feet and had to lay down to see the bear it was very hard to make out the head from back end.
When my daughter could see the head I told her about 18 inchs back hold on the bear and when I tell you to shoot pulll the trigger. We layed there for min. waiting for the right time finaly the dog stepped to the side and I yelled pull bang the bear dropped right there. Then it was pulling dogs off and getting them tied up.
Some of the others showed up and we were able to get the dogs rounded up and tied.
I knew it was big but did realize how big until we went up to it. When we got to to a scale a few hrs later it weighed 431lbs feild dressed.
She used a ruger mkII left hand with rem 220gr round nose at about 2450.

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.
What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

I know that has to be more rewarding for you, than you shooting the same Bear.

daniel77I think that you should put the word out among the boys in her school that she willingly crawls within 20 ft. of a 500 lb. bear and then kills it for fun. Great job there.

Intimidating to wouldbe suitors when this chick is WAY out ahead of everyone elses hunting experiences....tell'em she killed him with a stick.
Curious though were this happened. Always love to hear a good hound hunting story.
The Hunt goes on forever, the season never ends.

DMB she always tells me I get more excited then she does when she shoots something. I tell her it is just being a Dad. I belive her she is very calm and cool when she is shooting.
Thats a 5.5 inch front pad on that paw.

In this case, put the word out that she's self sufficient, can bring her own bacon to the table, and need not be babied (though she'd better be well taken care of).

p dog shooterOLDBIKER there was no ground shinkage on this one. I heard some one shot a 700lb plus one by ladysmith wis. haven't seen any comfirmed reports yet on that one.

My son called my late this past Friday evening to tell me he just shot a Bear 50 miles east of me. Friday was our opening day for Bear season in Michigan.
I'll guarantee you, I was more happy about him shooting that Bear than I would have been if I had shot it.

p dog shooterchilcotin hillbilly Was way to busy to worry about pictures in the brush
besides my daughter forgot her camera in the trk about a mile away.
Just the two of us before the bear was shot was more worried about killing the bear not hitting any of the dogs and all the other things that goes along with getting within 20 of a large bear fighting the dogs.

GuyMCongratulations! That's a fine looking bear. Outstanding that she crawled in there and hammered it at such close range.
I'd like to try hound hunting for bear someday. Seems like it would be a lot of fun!
