<Norbert>Select One From Column "A"
Who killed elephants with softs on a head shot?
The restriction to one bullet is far from reality and not necessary, but I have a proven combination:
.416 Weatherby and 400 gr BarnesX.
11 November 2002, 06:23
<bigdogfan2003>I am going to go a little different route here. I don't have one of these, but I would say a 338 Lapua Mag. It is an extremely accurate caliber. I'm not sure on bullet weight. My second choice would be my 7mm Rem. Mag. For the smaller stuff, a 160 grain Barnes X at 3100 fps. For the larger animals, a 195 grain Barnes Original at 2800 fps.

POSeurNickudu,
Caliber:
500 AHR.
I usually use both Woodleigh softs and FMJ, but since you have stated only ONE bullet.
Load:
570 grain Woodleigh FMJ.
Bertram Brass
Fed 215 Primer
125 gr IMR 4350

NickuduHi GeorgeS - all choices to be considered legal for our purposes here (3rd post from top). If you alter your selection please advise. Thanks.
Norbert, my friend! Body shots are O.K. on elephant too!

But, I see you have the solution in the Barnes "X". Very good!
Mike416Rigby, 500AHR - You're In! Thanks.
Bigdogfan2003 - O.K. You're in but give me a bullet choice when you decide. Thanks!

JohnTheGreek.416 Rem Mag with 400 grain Barnes solids.
It has worked pretty damn well for me so far on everything from Whitetail does to Eland and Bison so I have no intention of switching now!

NickuduJohn, please relax. You don't have to switch!

<Fireplug>The one load aspect makes this tough, since for the pachyderms (love this old term) almost require that you have a solid if you only have one load. You gave us a pass on legal issues, but to always kill well with a solid it needs to be big and preferably flat pointed.
Most use will be for game to 600 pounds so extreme weight or recoil is an undue handycap, thus the round needs to be moderate in power (for elephant that is) and not require a magnum action. This choice could get expensive for bullets, but .416 Taylor with Speer AGS solids for me.

NickuduO.K. - Guess that's aboout all the input we could hope for on a Sunday. I had already decided on the .375 H&H with the 270 grain Barnes "XLC" bullet @ 2,800 fps and, although some of these well thought out postings got my wheels turning, I'm staying with it. I suppose I should put up our totals on a separate discussion thread to make it easier for interested folks to beat it around some and see if we can come away with anything of value from our findings. Hey, thanks again to all who took the time to make a contribution. I had more than a few surprises and definitely benefited from it.

McCrayI may be labeled as boring, but I'd pick a 338 WinMag with 250 grain Partitions. If I didn't need to worry about ammo availability, I might pick something faster, bigger or more powerful.
But it would still be 338 bore.
Joe.

Finally! I can hardly believe we have our first and only entry for the .338 Winchester Magnum.

Pecos41OK, I'll play.
Put me down for a 375 RUM with 300gr A-Frame on top of about 96 gr of 4831. If I can't stay out of trouble with that, I probably deserve to get chewed on. Anyhow, I still remember how to climb a tree and with the proper motivation, I'll wager I can still climb pretty fast.

Please tell me the telegraph operator didn't look like this guy and go by the name Todd or Axel!

NickuduCouldn't say, really. He kept putting other guys with other names but the same voice on the phone and then they started talkin about buying a new lathe or something. I lost track of him in the confusion but he certainly sounded like he knew his shit. I'm sure you'll have your money pronto.

RIPNICKUDU,
I would really prefer two bullet weights in a 416 Rigby (350-400 grains), one spitzer SP one solid, BUT, if you insist on ONE BULLET, I shall have to design my own, for pronghorns to pachyderms:
375/404 with a 300 grain monometal copper bullet that has an FN on one end and a spitzer hollow point on the other end.
The FN end also serves as a sort of boat tail for the spitzer.
One bullet can thus be used like an aerodynamic soft and as a solid. Fired SP forward on pronghorns and FN forward on pachyderms at close range.
If Gerard would make a 300 grain HV with a base like an FN nose, in .375 caliber, I woud go for it.
Just for fun.
