They just published a study saying that there is only one true wolf in North America and that the red wolf and the eastern wolf are just gray wolf/coyote crossbreeds

QuintusHow in the hell did a wolf and coyote cross? Maybe when the wolves were tearing a male coyote to pieces and his stuff was flying all over the place just the right stuff landed on just the right spot on a she wolf in heat? I guess if a Packer fan can marry a Bears fan, a wolf could possibly screw a coyote.

CrazyhorseconsultingThe theory from some sides is that at some point in time, numbers of both Easter Grey wolves and coyotes were lower and their ranges overlapped to a point where competition between the two species was not as intense and cross breeding did take place.
Having worked with both Grey Wolves and Red Wolves, it is difficult to distinguish a Red Wolf from a coyote.
Even the rocks don't last forever.
That's because red wolves are 75% coyote.
The first real article I have seen about the coyoteXwolf here in NY and PA the differences were clear with skull photos DNA etc. When I first saw one of those 80-90 lb creatures I was impresseed .Finally there was aproper study instead of various quesses , coy-dog and other names going back many years .
Somewhat similar to the increase in the brownXpolar bears .

wasbeemanMany, many years ago, Memphis State U did a study on the then migrating coyotes and the "coy dog".
Among their findings was that when a coyote moves into new territory, they will breed with whatever is available. Once the coyotes are established, they will kill a dog that earlier they would breed with when nothing else was available. And in the "eastern" coyote's DNA there was traces of wolf DNA. I have trapped both the eastern coyote and the western coyote and have found the eastern coyote is somewhat bigger and much more aggressive.

CrazyhorseconsultingAs I say, having worked with both Mexican Grey Wolves and Red Wolves, Red Wolves are more coyote looking/acting than even the Mexican Grey's.
In the field it would be damned hard to tell the difference between a large coyote and a smallish Red Wolf.

CrazyhorseconsultingThe top picture is not all that different looking than a Red Wolf
The bottom two are most likely coyote/dog crosses, DNA testing would be the only way to have an idea.

Sounds kinda like us humans don't it?
Screw what's available and don't worry about it.
About 20 years ago a doc in Denver asked if I still hunted coyotes as he had property south of here with a Rottweiler running with a pack of coyotes that wouldn't let him out of the truck one day. Not having a gun, he just went back home.
When I went to check, they were out in the pasture and came running to the gate. I was ready long before that and shot the Rotty in the head. Mailed him the tagged collar from him. Turned out after he contacted the owner. They'd stopped at a interest point half mile away and let the dog out to P. It took off and never came back.
I'd like to know if he planted some seeds and what they might look like. He sure had a nasty disposition. I killed two of the coyotes that day too. Since it was summer I just let 'em lay after taking the collar off.
