It's sad that money and ego drives the most severe poaching cases to date. Damn social media seems to drive a lot of this.

To answer the question, YES, the fines are usually way less than an outfitted hunt for the same single animal hunt.

Depends on ones point of view! Ive met some sourdoughs that claim if they got caught and fined 100,000. dollars, that would add up to 10 cents a pound!!!

I recall a lot of locals poaching in my youth as the country was coming out of the great depression, the land owners farmers and ranchers preferred deer to soup lines in New York I guess..

The drive to get the biggest and best.

Has been going on for a long time.

The other day there was a report that a bank was find a few million dollars for “toxic” fees.

The same report showed that the banks have made BILLIONS in profit from these fees!

May be the same applies here.

Unless they name the fine far exceed the profits gained, nothing is going to chance!

I do think penalties should be way stiffer but, sadly, there will always be those tempted/demented souls who think they can get away with game theft!

for the most part this is true. There was a case a few years ago of a hunting show that got caught poaching deer in Utah and elk in Yellowstone for his tv show. His total fines were somewhere around 15K. He stated he had been doing it for years and had saved 20-50K per year on outfitter costs. I think it is more prevalent in the hunting TV and video industry than most people think.

Went on an out of state deer hunt years ago. Lady would not sell us a license without a hunters safety course card, which I hadn’t seen in decades. Tried everything but no dice. Looked up the fine for hunting without a license and was about the same as a license. Went on hunting and had a good time!

I remember a guy getting busted hunting Dall sheep in a world class area about 10-12 years ago who got, I believe, a $5k fine, lost his rifle, and a 1 year hunting suspension. He had multiple poached heads in his house. Given that sheep season is once a year, a guided hunt costs several tens of thousands,, and guys can wait decades to draw a tag in a sought after area, the penalties are not a deterant IMO.

I have a bit of sympathy for the guy who shoots a 49.5" moose in a 50" area or a sheep that is 1/4" short of being full curl and who turn them selves in, but guys hunting months out of season, etc can't fall back on the "honest mistake" excuse and should have the book thrown at them with solid jail time. My old town's former police chief (!!!) got a slap on the wrist for guiding hunters in a closed area, lying about kill locations on official paperwork, dragging bears into his permitted areas, etc. They should throw away the key in such cases.

I’d say chain gang for couple of months in the heat of Midwest summer in the back of big slaughter house hauling guts in wheel barrow and pay for the privilege to be there, sleep on cot outside next to cattle pens…
