Tasunkawitko-
I am so thankful I had just finished swallowing the last of my iced tea when I read your reply, for the heavily-sweetened liquid would have been heck to clean out of the keyboard & off of the monitor...

CkempFinally got drawn for elk this year. My hunt starts in a couple of weeks. I've got the nosler partition bullet to shoot pretty well out of my 270 win, but with all this praise about the match king bullet, I wonder if I should give those a try on my hunt. Any suggestions?

CkempSorry, I just re-read the posts and it seems that the sierra match king bullets in 338, 308, and 6.5 calibers are the only acceptable ones for game. I'll just stick to what I have. Thanks.

Sierra, who actually makes these bullets, says NOT to use them on game. You would think their stance would hold some water.
I've used enough of them to have my own thoughts -- thoughts based on fact & experience, I might add -- to know that they are FAR from the best available projectile for game. They may do great one time, pencil through the next or even come totally unglued.
Stick to the Partitions and you'll do just fine.
Good luck on the hunt, by the way!

CkempI'm new to this whole reloading thing, but why would sierra make only certain caliber bullets acceptable for hunting and other caliber bullets not acceptable for hunting when they are the same type. ie the sierra match king. That sounds weird to me.

this info is news to me regarding certain sierra match king bullets, where some are more acceptable for hunting while others are not.
I've used SMKs on deer and now the Berger VLD as well. If you are set on trying a match design bullet on game, I'd suggest the Berger. I had a friend role a doe in Alabama years ago with a SMK from his 30.06. The shot was straight on at about 50 yards.
That friend sold his rifle and ammo that I loaded to a mutual friend of ours from the gym. That guy and I went to college together in Iowa, and he's the one that introduced me to our northern Missouri property that we hunted for 5 seasons. While I was stalking with this friend during many hunts, I watched him shoot several deer over the years at ranges from 30 yards to almost but less than 200 yards. He lost more deer with those SMKs.
We tracked one buck, as the crow flies, probably about 1500-2000 yards following very sparse blood, 2 farms over from where we were when he shot it.
The last 2 seasons we hunted there together, I suggested he buy some factory Federal with NBTs. No more lost deer.
All shots were in lung region, no shoulder shots to my knowledge.
I personally wouldn't use the SMKs. Why bother when they make so many hunting bullets?

you really aren't too smart, but keep trying, it's fun to watch stupid people bumping into themselves - kinda like watching a slinky go down a flight of stairs.

jwp475, I don't have a dog in this fight, but perhaps it is a bit over the top to put this in the context of "proper shot placement".
Here is a quote from the original thread over on 24HourCampfire:

...the bull step out at 320 yards and dad took the shot…he might be getting old but he still has it, he sent the 300 SMK on it’s way and it hit right in the neck and that’s was it.
I'm really happy for this guy's dad, he may be getting on a bit, but he got his elk this year. Power to him!
By the sound of it, though, it was probably more a case of flinching in the right direction, or having the elk walk into the bullet... Getting older or not, I don't know of that many people who consciously take neck shots at 320 yards under field conditions.
But maybe I'm wrong, and it is all part of this newfangled "range it,check the wind, dial in correction, aim, sqeeze and only one shot" business??

Well first off he never flinched and he hit where he was aiming, and the elk never walked into the bullet either and if you even watched the video you would have seen that.
I’m sure you don’t know many people that can shoot well enough to take neck shots at 320 yards few can and these old guy is one of them that can.
Than again he wasn’t shooting an off the rack Wall-Mart special either.
The only thing you have correct in your post is… maybe I'm wrong, and it is all part of this newfangled "range it, check the wind, dial in correction, aim, squeeze and only one shot" business??
A few year ago I shot a deer in the neck as well and the thing dropped like a rock. I told my dad that I planned on doing that. Eventually, I fessed up and told him that I didn't really mean to shoot it in the neck. Apparently he new the truth all along. I felt better, though, once I got that off my chest.

They don't. Sierra makes MatchKings for targets, Varminter Blitz/BlitzKing for varmints and GameKings for game.
Someone may try and tell you different in an effort to validate their bullet selection, but it just doesn't hold water.
I've used lots of different bullets on game, and like Doc said, if you want to use a match bullet to hunt light, thin-skinned game with, make sure it's a Berger VLD Match/Hunting bullet.
Here's a report on the Berger 7mm, 140 that has just been released:

Obviously you’re a little bit of a liar… so I will have to take anything you say with a grain of sand… not everyone lies when they make a shot But I’m glad you finally confessed and told the truth.
