My only rifle.

Caliber: .300 WSM
Action: new pre '64 type stainless
Barrel: Mike Rock 5R 1:11.27 stainless
Stock: Choate U.S,/Tgt stock
Scope: IOR 2.5-10x 42mm illum MP8 ret
Mount: IOR 20 moa base & IOR tactical rings

The rifle is currently with the riflesmith, having a new Mike Rock barrel installed and all metal teflon coated. Barrel is straight taper .9" dia at muzzle, and will be finished at 26" measure from the face of the action.

The last barrel prefered 190 gr Sierra Match Kings, with 180 gr Ballistic Silver Tips grouping very well. Which I use will depend on what the new barrel does it's best with.

Alabama whitetails are my main quarry this season. We have a daily limit of 2, hunter's choice of either 2 does or a 1 buck and 1 doe, Nov 22 - Jan 31. I plan to take 4 for me and one for Hunter's for the Hungry or Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry, or which ever organization is running the program now. I will also exterminate any feral hog that I see and donate the meat, if there is one left around here. No daily limit and no closed season on feral hogs.

For hogs and whitetails in the deep woods of north and east Texas where it is like hunting in a swamp along the rivewr bottoms I'm shooting a Savage 116 300WinMg, with a SS 20" fluted barrel and a 2" factory muzzle brake in "African Walnut", that gives 3/4" groups using Hornady 180gr SST's. In south or west Texas where the ground is a little more open the Tikka 270 Winchester in a wood stocked Whitetail Hunter with Federal Premium Sierra Game King 130's that all go into close to the same hole has been the winning ticket on WT deer and axis in years past. I picked up a M70 BOSS 338 early this year but busted out on the planned elk hunt due to knee surgery next week and will play with it late in the season when there is meat in freezer. A friend is going to sell me his limited production SAKO FinnSport 300WinMg that wears an old model Leupold 3 1/2 x 10 sometime this fall and that may also get a go late in the year and I know that rifle will shoot straight as I sold it to him new back in the early 80's. Enough new toys for this year anyway.

I'll be hunting whitetails here in Texas. They generally run smaller here. Most likely will use my Win mod 70 in .243. A big part of the reason for that is that my grandson frequently hunts with me and he handles the .243 well. I started him shooting .22 centerfires and he took his first few with them. Then he moved up to .243--so that's the "big gun". He got his first at age 9 using a hornet, then a couple with .222 and the last several with .243. He's 14 now and has gotten atleast one and usually more every year since he started.

I've decided at least one hunt with be open sights only so I'm going to take my 1891 Mauser sporter in 7.65x53 and my pre-war 98 Mauser by Ernst Hunger in 8x57 on a whitetail hunt. The other hunts will be with a custom 7x57 on a VZ24 action, and will probably hunt with the BLR in 300 WinMag.

I'll use one of several Stainless M70's sotcked in African Walnut... 308, 30-06 or 338 WM. Probably I'll continue my season (after a good spring bear season) with the Stainless 30-06. It has a factory 22" fwt. tube and a matte 2x7 Leupold on top in silver Burris Zee's. It shoots nice sub moa three shot groups with nearly any flatbase bullets and is currenty zeroed with 165 gr. Failsafes at 225 yards.
