Since everyone is busy saying nasty things about the various gunmakers in the other poll

, I thought I'd find out what ya'll plan on taking this hunting season?
I got a new .338 WinMag built on a Springfield 1903 action that I'm using for deer season. I know it's a little big, but deer's all I got drawn for and I want to use my new toy.

Still CrawfishHave two new .41 caliber handguns that will catch the brunt of the hunting duty this season. I just got a Ruger SBH Hunter in .41RemMag and also a 12 inch SSK Contender in .411JDJ. The Ruger for deer and the JDJ for pigs should do just fine.
23 August 2003, 13:44
bearstalkerMy Model 70 338 Win. Mag. and my Model 70 375 H&H. Only 2 rifles that I own.
23 August 2003, 13:57
Frank NowakowskiA 1955 era M70 in .300 H&H mag. The gun was left to me by a very good friend that died of cancer last year. I intend to shoot either a good bull or a buck, with it in his memory.
My Crazy Winchester collector buddy is going nuts over this decision, as the gun is as "mint" as one can get without having the box and hangtags. Doesn't matter to me as I will never sell it in my life anyway.
I'll probably carry my .338-06 on guiding trips.

Sask_Huntermy tikka 7mm will get the call most of the time with my rem 700 in 6.5 arch getting some duty.

I hope to do all the shooting with a 6x45mm and a 6mm-284 this year, maybe use a few of the 85-grain bullets I stashed up.

artyI will use either my black diamond, .44 redhawk, or crossbow during the gun season, and my hoyt during bow.

savage49494Savage stainless in .338 Win. Mag.
23 August 2003, 15:23
25CalNutI still haven't decided which rifle I will use. I only own two; for now that is! I have a Yugo M48 8mm Mauser and a SIG SHR970 in 25-06, so either one will work fine hunting deer here in PA. I used my Mauser to get a nice buck two years ago, and took my SIG out last year but didn't even see a deer. So I am leaning towards my SIG this year, but still not sure.
23 August 2003, 15:29
fla3006When I go after whitetails- G33-40 Mauser in 6mm Remington. Hogs- 7x57 or 30-06 Brno ZG-47 or 8x57 Brno 21-H, usually decide at the last minute.
23 August 2003, 15:46
NebraskaIf the weather's nice, I'll be using a Marlin MR-7 in 270 Win that was given to me as a gift from my step-father. It's a nice looking rifle and a nice design to boot.
Sadly, blue tongue has taken it's toll on the area over the last 2-3 years so if it's anything like last year, I won't even be pulling the trigger.
![[Frown]](images/icons/frown.gif)
The local population may very well need a little hunter self-restraint for a few years to come in order to get the population back to normal so more than likely, I'll just be watching the goings-on (w/ rifle in hand just in case the "Hartford" stops by).

23 August 2003, 15:55
GatehouseI'll be using my Brno 602 .375 H&H and my .300 WSM.
Both have synthetic stocks, and the .300 is stainless. They both have Leupold scopes.
I haven't shot anything with either of them yet, so I'll be 'breaking them in.'

SnakeLoverBrowning A-Bolt in .338 for evverything - This year that means WY mule deer.
23 August 2003, 17:02
smallfryJLHeard. For deer I will be hunting in 35B. Its still up in the air but it looks like I will be hunting with a 270. I built this one on a pre-letter 700 action made around 1974, rust blued, with a stainless pac-nor 24", a "mountain rifle" style stock that I modified by shortening the forend. It has a burris 1.5X5, and if I get my act togeather I will be shooting the new Hornady bonded 130s.
Where are you going to be at?
23 August 2003, 18:56
Dark Paladincaribou with my 358 Norma, and moose with my 375 ICL
23 August 2003, 19:19
boilerroomLocally I'll be using my A-bolt 25/06 for deer and yotes. I'll also use my Mathews Q-2 early and late season.
I'll be putting my Ruger stainless back into action for my goat hunt up north. Tomorrow I'm starting to work on my goat load with 140gr Barnes XBT.
23 August 2003, 20:05
Ray, AlaskaI am using the same Ruger M77 .338WM rifle I have used for the past eight years, and 250-grain Swift A-Frame bullets. The .338 is very popular in Alaska.
24 August 2003, 03:01
Pa.FrankWhat I really plan, is to be all tagged out before firearms season even starts, but in the event I don't, I'm planning on using an 1893 Marlin in 38-55
24 August 2003, 03:09
trollmanI just picked up a Weatherby stainless carbine (20" barrel) in 7mm-08. It weighs 6lbs without scope. It should do all I need for deer hunting.
24 August 2003, 03:21
DigitalDanA 20 ga Ithaca, or maybe a 12 Ga NID, possibly a Rugger 77, .358 win, or a #1 in .257 Bob, unless I use the Mod 94 or the 77/44. Maybe the Cape Gun though, love that .405 Win! Might even use my T/C carbine in 30-30, who knows?
![[Confused]](images/icons/confused.gif)
I never do until I get out of bed.
![[Wink]](images/icons/wink.gif)
Oh hell, forgot about the 7x64...maybe it's time for a new one to resolve all this confusion. What should I get guys?
![[Cool]](images/icons/cool.gif)
BTW, I don't like to be any closer than 5' when I shoot.
24 August 2003, 03:33
<phurley>I just put the finishing touchs on my .358 STA load for Alaska next week. A 270 grain North Fork bullet at about 2850 fps. The rifle is a model 70 Winchester that I call "Big Red" because it has a gorgeous red walnut stock. A stainless steel rifle and stainless 4.5 X 14 Leupold Vari X III scope. I am hunting Caribou and Wolfe, in Big Bear country. This time next week I will be looking at that beautiful country in the "Katmai". I may have butchered that spelling.
![[Wink]](images/icons/wink.gif)
Good shooting.
24 August 2003, 03:49
fredj338My trusty old model Ruger M77 in .338-06. My backup will be my M70 in .280 or, if I can shoot it a bit more, a newly rebarreled Ruger #1 in .338x74K.
24 August 2003, 03:53
hillbillybearModel 70 Winchester in .300 Remington Ultra Magnum. Leupold scope ( exact model and configuration yet to be determined). The super accurate, never miss, ultimate deer slaying load is still to determined.

Smallfry, I'll be hunting 18B. We've never hunted there before, but it was one of the areas for which the hunt dates worked for everyone.

David ThomasRuger Super Backhawk in 44 rem mag with 7 1/2" barrel and a 45 colt Ruger Bisley with 7 1/2" barrel will split most of the time. Took 2 deer and a hog with the 44 last year, the Bisley is only a couple of months old.
When hunting the Cyprus swamps I will use a Marlin 1895 in 45-70 with a 22" barrel and Ashley ghost ring sights.
When hunting the farmland of North LA I will use my 1983 vintage tang safety Ruger model 77 chambered in 30-06 or a pre-64 Win Model 70 chambered in 264 win.
All of this is subject to change at the last minute of course.
24 August 2003, 10:51
<WyomingSwede>I plan on using a Model 70 winchester in .264 winmag and a Mannilcer stocked mauser in 30-06.
If i lose confidence in those two rifles , well I will back up to my faithful 338-06 and get whatever needs doing done.

vapodogI'm replacing my deer and antelope gun ....pronghorn... with a M-70 in .260 Rem. It's my own creation with Douglas XX feather weight barrel and XXX fancy american walnut.
I do all my own work because I'm just plain cheap.....but it's a fine time. Love it!!
My "new" Model 94 Big Bore in .375 Win., firing handloads with 220-gr. Hornady InterLocks.

24 August 2003, 15:39
<Fuzz>I will start out with my Vanguard 270win.then I'll get frustrated and switch to my SBH 44mag or my Marlin 336 30-30. Most of my shots at deer are around 25-45yds.and quite brushy.

TonyKI got drawn for a late Blacktail hunt Nov 13-16
![[Big Grin]](images/icons/grin.gif)
So I will start out during the general season with a 14inch 309jdj in my Contender. I will not pull the trigger on a buck unless it is a 4x4 or better, (got a 3x3 blacktail 2 years ago with the 375jdj and a 2x3 muley last year with the 309), so I'm going to hold out with the late tag. I might take out a 03A3 30-06 if I lose my confidence.
![[Wink]](images/icons/wink.gif)
Hopefully I get a nice buck.

RMillerYesterday I took my 458 win enfield out and today I took out my 308 win pre-64 mod 70.

WstrnhuntrIts going to seem strange not toting the 300 savage this year, time to give the new 257 AI a run at deer. 8X57 for Elk. Ill bring along the old standby '99 for good measure though, may even take a couple strolls through the tall timber with a Model 81 Woodsmaster with williams peeps just for fun..
