Can a non-resident hunt in Texas with a sidearm?

577NitroExpressCan a non-resident hunt in Texas with a sidearm?
I am heading to Texas in June for the DRSS hunt and I am thinking I might want to bring my H&K USP Compact in .40 S&W loaded with snake shot (CCI) should I run into any critters. I'll be hunting with a big Nitro Express Double Rifle and not to hip on shooting snakes with that.
So, what are the rules for out of state hunters to have an OPEN handgun on their hip loaded with snake shot while hunting?
Any issues?

308SakoYes, I have in the past, just beware of how you carry it, not concealed.

Second thought is that you will ding the heck out of the stock on the double if you are using a belt high ride holster.

Wendell ReichAre you kidding? As Texans we are required to carry at least one sidearm at all times.

In all seriousness, as long as you don't try to stroll into Billy Bob's or Dairy Queen with a side arm, you will be perfectly legal. You can hunt with a sidearm in Texas, and carry one on private property. No license required. No issues about concealed or open (on private property) which I assume is where you will be hunting.
No issues about "importing" a pistol into Texas. Just follow common sense rules. Keep it in a locked gun case while traveling (I do not think this is a requirement, but I am sure it is not a bad idea).
I believe Texas honors other states concealed carry permits??? (Do not take my word for it though.) Anyone know for sure??

Tex21We do honor some of the other states' CCW permits, but I haven't been able to locate a list of which states' permits we recognize. Maybe a call to the Dept of Public Safety or someone at the NRA would help?
Incidentally, if you want to bring your .40, bring it; you won't be out of place. But don't bring it for snakes. I've spent 20 years in the woods of Texas and haven't run across enough snakes to feel insecure about traveling unarmed.
Enjoy the hunt!

There are several lists that show reciprocity agreements between states for CCW.
for example Another good exampleIf you are on private property, you can carry as you damn well please, at least as the landowner will allow. You have some rules as to what you can HUNT with though, no rimfire for big game for example. In a car a handgun can be carried in any manner as long as it is NOT visible, and I believe the CCW does not affect this.
Remember all advice is worth slightly less than you paid...I have to make a profit too! Don't do something stupid and you will be fine.
Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense.

Jim ManionA sidearm is not an issue:
http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/publications/annual/hunt/means/Never used shot in a semi automatic - I wonder if it provides enough backblast to rechamber a new round?
I have a derringer that takes 410 shotgun shells that you can use.....Frankly, it's a toss up as to whether I'd rather shoot that or get snakebit.
In any event, we probably need to plan to lay in an EXTRA supply of sour mash elixer, just in case.

N E 450 No2Paul,
As near as I can tell Texas law makes no distinction between residents and out of state hunters in regards to hunting with a handgun.
Bring it.
I have shot 9mm and 45ACP Speer shotshells in several semi-autos with out any problems.
