First Moose Hunt
My best friend and I will be headed to Ontario this October for our first moose hunt. We are both experienced hunters but have never hunted moose. I'm old enough to realize that one can profit and learn by listening to someone who has experience. Therefore I would appreciate any advise that you experienced moose hunter would be kind enough to share.

I have never hunted moose, but the advice from a friend who has....

Buy a new chest freezer, plug it in and make sure it works before you leave.

Make sure it will be empty when you get back.

You are gonna need it, for just ONE moose.

His definition of pessimist is "someone who goes hunting by any other travel means than a 3/4ton pickup truck so he can haul the meat home."

worried about the price of gasoline or Diesel?
Figuire your fuel costs Vs the price of airfare
and the aggrevation and stress of air travel

I define stress like the joke:
"Stress is caused by the brain overriding the body's basic desire to choke the life out of some asshole who desperatly NEEDS to be killed"

Now calculate the meat you bring home against the costs of the trip... how much meat did you leave behind because it exceeded your baggage limitation?

avoid feeling like an idiot when the meat is gone, bring every scrap home.
Antlers look impressive on the wall but aren't generally as fulfilling as meat in the freezer.... or in your belly.

Now, I'll give you a preview of what your guide is gonna tell ya....

when you Shoot the moose? KEEP shooting until it falls down, DO NOT stand there admiring the handiwork of your first shot.

a Bullwinkle may stand still or may shag ass for deep water, you really don't him to make it to deep water.
And believe me, if there wasn't water nearby there wouldn't be a moose there.

moose hunting practice - find the biggest meanest old bull you can. let him loose in the middle of the biggest most miserable swamp you can find. Then go out and try to shoot him. after you do cut him up and carry him out of the swamp on your back.

I've done two DIY moose hunts, New Hampshire in '97 and Maine in 2000.

My best advice is take along a buddy with a strong back and a weak mind!

Or you could call him out of the swamp to dry land and shoot him there. That's what I do...
