Short barrels 18" for deer
I am curious as to how many of you use short barrels for your deer or any big game hunting.I myself use a browning bar .338wm with a 18" and a 18" .30/06 remington pump as my backup rifle. The bar weights in at 7 3/4 pounds, great for brush and fits well when i use an ATV.

I have a 16" .41 Rem Mag barrel but I've yet to use the gun on deer. I would though. 210 gr. at 1858 fps.

I forgot to mention my 1891 Argentine carbine. It is a killer even if the sights aren't the greatest. Also have a .30 Herrett and a 10mm Auto (legal here in VA). I like light and short, that's why I mostly hunt deer with my Contender as a carbine during the regular season.

I have an 1891 Argentine with a 16 1/2" barrel and a set of Rem 700 open sights. It's OAL is 3" less than my M94 carbine. Perfect truck gun, has worked well on the local blacktails. If the range exceeds 150 yds or so, I'll try to get closer or pass on the shot.

Does my 18.5" Marlin guide gun barrel count? [Big Grin] It packs really well swings well and the short stubby barrel seems to add to accuracy. Since I hunt public CA lands and only started hunting last seaon I have taken nothing with it or my Savage Scout 20" Bbl. I think it may be time for a hog hunt!

I have a 03 in 30-06 with a 18 in barrel and have used a ultra lite ruger with 18 in barrel in 308. I find the muzzle blast way more then I like. I hunt a lot with savage 99 with a24 in barrel I do not find that a longe barrel is a handicap.

Agree with Dave in LB...No hair on the Marlin guide gun. Short, portable, swings easy, and packs a helluva wallop with the 45-70.

Actually, the longest shot I ever made on a whitetail was taken with an 18 inch barreled Remington 600 in 308. - Dan

All the time. My 19" barreled .308 and .376 Steyr Scouts are the core of my working battery, and I'm taking my Remington Model Seven Scout in .260 with an 18.5" barrel against whitetail this year (testing 125-grain Nosler Partitions at 2700 fps).

I used four stutzen with 18" barrel for hunted deer and "jabal". One Mannlincher Schoenauer 1903 in 6,5x54 and 3 Mauser, in 8x57 JS; .308 Win and 7,65 Argentine calibers.

Have several rifles with 20in or less barrel length. 1 of my favorites is a REM 700 titanium 308 with a 16.5 barrel , shooting 165 F.S. at 2600 thru my crony at 10 ft from mussle. 1.5 in group at 200 meters.
Also like REM. mod7 ,20 barrel full length laminated stock out of the REM. custom shop.
Have 1 in 243 & 1 in 350REM mag (similar ballistics to my 9.3x62).
BEing fat, middle age and soft I like the light handy size.also cant spell.

I really like my re-barreled Ruger M77 with a .338-06 Shilen 18 in. barrel and the Mannlicher stock. Had it made a year ago and since then it has done well on Blacktails.

He hasn't shot anything with it yet, but my dad has a Ruger MkIIRSI in .308 with an 18in barrel that is a sweet gun. Good looking too.

Well,...THANKS A LOT [Eek!] Dave and WyomingSwede.

Both of you had me REAL CONCERNED there for a couple of minutes. I knew my 444Mar came with a short barrel, but it hadn't actually sunk in about HOW SHORT!!

But there is good news about mine. Just took a yard stick to it and mine is actually a "little longer" than 1/2 a yard! [Big Grin]

Now, how `bout some HOGS??? Sooooooooouie!!!

I AM a REAL fan of shorties.

Had a 16" tube on my .45-70 years before they came out with the GG concept and at 16" it is REALLY handy though not Canadian legal. I sent it back to Marlin to get a 18" bbl on it for Canada and Marlin rebuilt it and restocked it at no charge. [Big Grin]

Have a Savage 110 .308 with 16" tube in a Choate folder VERY handy, but heavier then expected.

Have a shorty 16" .308 mauser

None of the deer thumped by the 45-70 shorty have acted any different then the long bbl version.

Full length stocks are neat!
