Brown Bear Attack
Just thought you might be interested. Yesterday, a 52yr. old deer hunter suprised a sow brown bear and cubs on the north end of Admirality Is. just west of Juneau. He didn't have time to get his rifle into action and was mauled quite badly. Juneau hospital did not have the expertise to treat severely lacerated head and face wounds, so was medivaced to Harbor View Hospital in Seattle.

what's his current condition?

There wasn't much on the news, but apparently his life is not in danger. However, considereing he had to be flown to Seattle, I would guess that he could end up with some rather interesting facial scars.

Juneau, just curious: is Edmonton closer than Seattle(as planes fly)? Seattle seems a long way from Alaska when being medivac'd, I bet.

Its probably 6 to 1 half a dozen to the other as far as distances, but Juneau (Bartlett Memorial Hospital) has the service all set up with a couple of the Seattle Hospitals. (By the way, medivac out of Juneau to Seattle happens quite frequently for many different kinds of serious accidents.)

Juneau,

We here at US Coast Guard Air Station Sitka, have been very busy the last couple weeks doing Medivacs all over S.E. Alaska.

Multiple trips to Klawock and Hoonah seem the norm each day. Suprised I didn't hear about that one, I guess he got back to Juneau some other way.

It's interesting that a sow with cubs is still out and about. I would have guessed a younger male, rather than a sow.

Reminds me why I like carrying a 416 Taylor when hunting our tiny deer!

BW,

From what I heard, the Coast Guard was all spooled up and ready to go (both helo and boat), but a chopper from Alaska Coastal just happened to be in the area when the call came through and picked him up. Was over to Air Station Sitka about a month ago. One of those crystal clear days where you think you've died and gone to heaven!
