Federal Premium .30-30
Anybody here have any experience with the Fed. Prem. 170 gr. nosler part. for a .30-30. I am looking into a hog hunt this spring, and was thinking about using them in my NEF handi rifle if they are accurate enough.

I have never used them in my 30-30, but with the partitions excellent reputation, I would say they'd have to work great. If they fit your accuracy criteria, then use them.

I've tried a few premiums (not the nosler) in handloads, but I couldn't see that much of an improvement. The 30-30's bullets in standard config, are pretty hard to beat, they offer good value for the money. Now I'm not hunting hogs, so maybe you'd see something there.

I wouldn't think that you'd need a partition at 30-30 velocities.

Mad Dog here is a couple of thoughts from the Big Sky Country.

First off you asked for experience, and so far you've gotten. ???
*never used
*used Preme's, but not the Noz
* and a wouldn't think it would be needed.

I have used them on Bear here and they work great it is an awesome bullet and it works really well out of a 30/30. It's been accuate for me and the performance has been very solid.

Me thinks it would work great for the bacon your a chasing!

I also read somewhere that Nosler admitted that they weren't needed. They only made them because they were asked to. So if you want to spend the money, go for it, I think they are the best of the premiums, and they do work to be sure, but don't expect miracles, and if your buddy shoots regular loads, don't expect quicker kills.

The 170 gr. Nosler is awesome. We guide pigs in the winter. Last year we had a wounded hog stand about 30 yards in front of us. The hunter could not get a shot of fast enough for me (never been charged by a hog but don't want to be either). So I took the 30-30 of the Quad rack shot the pig in the chest. He went down like a ton of bricks. Later the bullet was found in the hip and had travled through about 20" of pig to get there. The 30-30 is a great gun for this business. Light , fast, and with the 170 nosler hit hard at close range.

P.S. The bullet weight was still 114 gr.
