Kamo GariMoose hide tanning?
Can anyone offer any suggestions as to where I might get a moose hide tanned? I know it's not an easy job, and probably not cheap, but I'm interested. I'm in New England, and while I won't hold my breath, would prefer having it done around here--if nothing else to save on shipping. I'm told a wet hide can easily go triple digit pounds...
TIA for any help,
KG

Kamo GariOK, I'll look into it; thanks. Couple more questions, please. What did you do with it, and do you think it'd be suitable for garments? I've got it into my head that I want to make a jacket out of mine...
Thanks,
KG

kudu56Hair on or hair off tanning? There is a difference in cost and garments afterwards. Moose is very thick, to much for gloves, but does make nice moccasins. It might be to much for a coat as well, hair on or off, becuase of the thickness. I have never seen garments made from moose other than shoes and moccasins. MAybe some of the alaska guys might have more info. THe only moose hide I have seen tand was hair on and hung on the wall or over a stair rail. Let us know what you do.

ELKMAN2I assumed hair off, Moccasins, many pairs and anthing else you want UBER shaves the hide to a suitable thickness..If hair on.....good luck a tannery that does capes would do it but you will need deep pockets. I am ahving an elk hide tanned hair on, $220.00. not too bad but not nearly as thick as a moose. Do a Google search on tanneries.

Kamo GariYep, I was thinking hair off, along the lines of maybe a suede coat. I just like the feel of that kind of leather.
Thanks for the responses. Hopefully I'll have the hide in late October, and go from there.

brass thiefThe jacket is a great idea, I"d love to hear how it turns out. It"d be great to have a "trophy" you could wear!

ScottSSpecialty Leather in Boone Iowa. They do good work and will do either hair on or off. Hair on is obviously more expensive. Used to be around $10/sqft hair on, but you would have to look them up on the net. Their addy is something like specialityleather.com.
