These forums are great. There is such a wealth of information here.

I'm new to shooting and buildings some targets to practice on. My question is what is the best sort of paper to use for a target?

I WORK IN A DESIGN FIRM SO WE ALWAYS HAVE A LOT OF OLD BLUEPRINTS. I DRAW FULL SIZE DEER ON 'EM AND SHOOT OFFHAND AT 100 YARDS. GREAT PRACTICE.

I have switched to using computer paper with day glow orange stick ons. I buy the Birchwood Casey ones at Walmart and I have used some from Avery as well. The paper is 24# regular size.

The advantage of these targets is that I can see a bullet hole in the "black" at 200 yds with an ordinary scope plus there are 120 stick ons in a package. Thats a lot of targets.

Guys

Thanks for the replies. I don't want to spend the money buying targets. What I want to do is make my own. But I want to cut really clean circular holes through the paper. Not jagged ones.

So I was wondering what sort of paper weave or texture is best?

Also is it better to aim at targets with a circular aiming point or a square one?

Depends on sights and personal preference. Round for iron sights for sure; W/normal duplex reticle, I prefer diamond shaped target w/white center. Size the target so that not too much white shows on all four quadrants.

The red dot stick on targets make good aiming point, too w/irons or scope.

Best bet is to give them a try and see what size fits your sight at the range you plan to shoot.

I "plunder" (with permission, of course) an appliance dealer's empty boxes, cut out silhouettes with a razor knife and shoot them from field positions.

There was a thread some time ago about target boards that made sharp-edged holes. Some fella was all bowed-up because no one wanted to pledge their support for his product without seeing it first.

Some other poster suggested artists' "scratch board".

What are the approx. length and width dimensions of the body of the silhouettes you cut out? I'd like to make some of my own for more realistic practice from field positions.

PigDog, sometimes I buy my targets from Sinclair. But more often than not, I print my own using the free targets at www.uspalma.com or the ones at Honeywell Sportsman Club's website. When I print my own, I use 65 lb Bright White 8.5" X 11" Card Stock that you can buy at Office Depot. It's plenty thick enough so that bullets will not tear it. You'll have nice clean bullet holes. Furthermore, you can three hole punch them so you can put them in a three ring notebook for future reference.
