Its a tahr. They are very popular to hunt in New Zealand, where they have been transplanted from the Himalayas.

Cheers,
Canuck

No mystery or drama here...it's indeed a Tahr, readily available in N.Z.

Harsh,

If you go to the NZ/Australia section here, you can view lots of tahr pix. Here's one I killed in NZ in 2005. -TONY

A friend of mine killed one of those on a ranch in Texas recently. It hat gotten onto the ranch and the land owner didn't know what it was and just let him shoot it. Lucky individual to say the least.

The Hunt goes on forever, the season never ends.

I didn't learn this by reading about it or seeing it on TV. I learned it by doing it.

Ryan, are you sure your friend didn't shoot an aodad? They are all over Texas, and I have never heard of a Tahr in the states.

Gibson,

Actually, quite a few of the exotic game factories in Texas offer tahr hunts.

Of course, God never intended for tahr to live there; if he did, he would have given Texans some real mountains. Big Grin -TONY

There are Tahr on Mt. Taylor here in New Mexico. They were imported for a high-fence hunting operation but many are not inside a fence. There is no closed-season on the ones outside the fence.

I had heard at one time that some roam wild somewhere in CA, too.

And speaking of seasons, NZ has none either and there are no limits on how many one kills. Same with the wild red deer. -TONY

Gibson,
Yes I'm sure it wasnt an audad. I saw the pics. He's killed quite a few audad already. There arent too many exotic animals that Texas doesnt have at some point or another. Outdoor Writer is right, although the Davis Mountains in west Texas are pretty rough.

Wow, I had no idea there were any in the States. Seems like a lot of states have some weird non-native species running around these days. I just saw an axis doe this fall in Northern Michigan! Eeker
