Another
rare bear attack
https://www.theguardian.com/us...wstone-national-parkA woman has been found dead in Montana after coming into contact with a grizzly bear on a trail west of Yellowstone national park.
The state’s fish, wildlife and parks department said the woman was found deceased on Saturday on a trail near West Yellowstone, a Montana town nestled in the Custer Gallatin national forest just west of Yellowstone national park.

Michael RobinsonTwo women in the last few months have been gored by buffalo inside Yellowstone. The bull buffalo are in rut right now.
Now we have this killing of a woman by a grizzly just outside the park. Few details on how things unfolded. Maybe a sow with a cub.
My sense is that these unfortunate women may have lacked situational awareness.
Have you seen the selfies, generally posted by Asian women, of them standing nearly on top of buffalo?
Yellowstone is not an amusement park.
Even with the highest situational awareness, things can go sideways fast.
These animals are surely picturesque, but they are essentially wild and sometimes deadly. I don’t think the general public really appreciates that.

Bear attacks are rare, then they go on to mention two more in the same area. We just had a "black bear encounter" near Canmore. Stats suck if you're the exception victim.

We have the same problems in our National Parks here.

Use Enough GunThe latest article says that there were two tracks of bears at the kill site-one of a mature grizzly and one of a cub. Sounds like she surprised the mother bear and cub while on the trail. The woman killed regularly jogged in that area, the article said. Had been a teacher for over twenty years. Moreover, she had no bear spray or other bear deterrents on her. Sad.

And why does it matter the reason the bear attacked her.

MARK H. YOUNGJust today on the news people are crowding around the sea lions on the shore in California for pix and the sea lions are charging them. Someone will get hurt eventually.

I’m not joking
I’d kill at least have of them
At least have a regular season for them

Michael RobinsonOne of the women gored by a buffalo at Yellowstone the other day is reported to have suffered two punctured lungs and seven broken vertebrae.
Not sure about the other one’s injuries.

So lets hear the answer. Seriously

crbutlerFrom my end, what you are going to do about it depends on the situation.
If someone decides to jog in a wilderness area and practice no self or situational awareness, I’m not supporting culling/ shooting that bear.
If you wander up and pet a grizzly bear cub, and then shoot its mother, are you going to get away with claiming self defense?
On the other hand, if you had been making noise, tried to avoid the bear, and showed you practiced good awareness yet you still had to shoot mama bear, I’m good with that being a self defense case.
So yes, it does matter.
Here, the woman is dead… that’s bad. But if there is no problematic behavior on the part of the bear other than natural attack defending its cub, then leave it be.
Difference.

p dog shooterI do not give difference to bears.
Bears are not sacred animals.
Any bear that attacks a human should be killed.
Killing the few bears that attack humans will not harm the over all population.
More bears plus more people in bear habitat equals more surprise bear encounters. Factor in a higher percentage of clueless recreationalists and we can see the graph of these incidents only going one way.
I would guess, except in very rare occasions, this happens because of stupid, ignorant behavior!

True.
But looking at some videos on the media, where silly tourists try to get a selfie…?
We arrived at a farm in South Africa one afternoon.
They also bred lions.
They took us in sort of golf carts to see the lions.
We were told to stay on the carts, to never leave them.
We had a great afternoon looking at the lions.
Later we were told the day before an American woman decided to get out of the golf cart.
Apparently a lioness jumped on her.
Didn’t do her any harm.
But she wanted to sue the farm owner!!

crbutlerWell, then you are technically pushing for eradication of bears or banning folks from going into wilderness areas.
The more people and less wild areas, the more adverse interactions.
Most of us are hunters, and want healthy populations of bears. If every bear that adversely interacts with people gets shot, and you don’t stop people from acting stupidly, stupidity will rule.
