I don't know of a single western state that's not doing the same thing.
Good way to raise revenue. My personal opinion is that if they raise that kind of money on a few donated tags then they won't raise our tag prices out of this world.
Just a thought

If you call that state a bunch of whores for the few tags they auction, what do you call Utah and the way they have given SFW all those top tags from the average Joe pool to be auctioned off at their Expo every year? Talk about whores!

Wyoming is far from the worst of the lot.

Just infuriates me.

I know quite a few folks that live in Utah. Ownership of a tag in Wyoming is you are a resident isn't a big deal. You can buy OTC deer, elk and probably draw an antelope at leas three times in 5 years.

Utah, Nevada and Arizona you might draw a tag once in 5 years and that's for deer. So they answer this bullshit by auctioning more tags off.

Of course if you have the means in Utah or Colorado you can buy a landowner tag.

Makes me irate, maybe whores is a strong word.

I wouldn't even put AZ or NV in the same sentence with Utah! You could probably add up all the tags like that from the western states and not come up with the amount that Utah puts out through that Expo. What really sucks is that they all come out of the draw pools for the average person who waits a lifetime for the chance to draw a tag while a guy like Denny Austad goes to the front of the line every year and buys top tags and then pays Mossback a fortune, who in turn whores out people all over the place to find and sit on a big animal until the "shooter" gets there to pull the trigger and then do their "grip and grin" photos like it was a real hunt! Pretty damn disgusting when they call that hunting and try to pawn it off as money for conservation!

Your right, Utah's program is trash.

I have heard a lot of hear say I won't report about what goes on with Mossbacks hired goons in Utah from friends of mine that are unfortunate enough to live there.

To me the surprising part is the Minnesota SCI chapter auctioning off a Wyoming tag! That's more disturbing than the tag, IMHO.

Does anyone have any "real" data on the tags that Utah gives away? I live here and mostly agree, especially with the CWMU, but I do not know how many they give away/"sell" to necessitate being a whore. It took me 30+ years to draw an elk and I quite hunting deer in Utah. Interested in learning about the tags sold this weekend at the expo. For the record, and off just a bit, I would put our local beer up against anyone!

The only thing more disturbing than that is at our local SCI banquet where they raffle off a statewide Colorado Moose tag someone from Kansas or Nebraska wins it every year. WTF!!
I've been applying for a Colorado Moose since 1986 and bought thousands of dollars of raffle tags for it too, still no love from the Moose tag Gods, although this is my lucky year, I'm a winner I can feel it.

It is strange that Mormons are brewing good beer, but I'd agree. You have good beer there.

My wife (pregnant) loves Utah, she says they have the best maternity stores in America.

***The best I can come up with for the auction that just ended at the Expo was about 40 and I believe the highest one went for about $325,000. That's just the auction tags from the Utah DWR pools and doesn't count landowner tags the average guy also loses out on! Then there are other auction tags from states like the one MN had in it. I believe there is something like another 200 tags taken from the draw pools that people can buy a $5 raffle ticket for. Those have to be validated at the site during the Expo itself, so that shuts out NRs unless they happen to be vendors, kids attending school in the area, etc. The whole thing sucks and millions of dollars go into pockets where it's not accounted for and never gets back onto the ground for the conservation efforts it is supposedly designed to help. The main organization that runs it won't even open their books to show where the bulk of the money is going and the DWR is just as suspect for trying to extend the Expo contract for another 5 or 10 years without other organizations being allowed to bid on it against them!

I don't post on here much but this one hits close to home. Utah has, or HAD, I should say some great hunting. While I was growing up I never had the desire to draw a great tag because I had great hunting in my area. Then slowly my state became iffy to say the least. At one point I would have fought anyone who complained about Utah. This was some years ago I must admit.
Now I am ashamed to say where I come from. Do you remember when a Governors tag was just that? It was the only tag in the state for that animal. I did agree with that system, as it was a ONE TAG DEAL. The man with the most money had one tag. Now we have more damn Gov tags than anybody. The state of Utah is in it for the money and they do a bad job hiding it. I definitely think Utah is the biggest whore state we have ever seen. It will take quite a bit to overtake it.
If I pissed anybody off by writing this I am sorry, but that's the truth. Utah can't manage wildlife. Where did whirling disease come from? Our own Gov Mike Leavitt.
Thanks, Jeff

I completely forgot about the Antelope Island auction tags. The deer went for $390,000 and the sheep for "only" $85,000. Some 24 year old guide from BC had the winning bid for the deer there and the $320,000 AZ deer tag. I wonder where he's getting all the money, as there is no guide anywhere on God's green earth worth that kind of money. I wonder if he'll hire Mossback! The auction tags alone brought in $2.17 million according to the Salt Lake Tribune. I wonder how much of that will really hit the ground!

I moved to Utah from Wyoming a little over 3 years ago. While I love the area I'm living in the hunting doesn't even begin to hold a candle to what I had in Wyoming. When I was there I drew area 7 Elk tags for 10 years running, bought a general deer tag along with 2 doe/fawn deer tags, and the same for antelope every year. I was able to consistently fill my freezer to the point I didn't buy any meat from the store, and usually donated a couple animals to others I knew could use the help. Here I just hope I can get a single tag. Cost will end up being pretty close to trying to hunt Wyoming as a non-resident.

Yes it's cocked, and it has bullets too!!!

Just go to huntexpo.com for your answer.

I especially love the fact that they pimp out sheep tags to "Non-Residents" only.

They surely wouldn't want to have a "youth only" drawing. Its better to give Utah OIL tags to NR's Roll Eyes

I don't mind a few tags in a General Draw for conservation, but the Expo tags are ridiculous!
