.416 caliber 300 gr 'X' Bullet??

Do you guys think this would be a good elk and moose bullet? I appreciate the input guys. judy

Just look at the expanded bullet! [Eek!]

I load these to 2800 fps in my 416 rem for moose, bear, and elk. Haven't gone hunting with my 416 since I loaded these, so no reports on game performance....yet [Wink]

It works better than it should for a light for calibre bullet. It will exit a broadside monster Alaska/Yukon bull no problem. The 350gr. X is also an exellent choice (maybe better).

With the 300X try 86-88 grains of RL-15. (work up to 88gr. carefully).

The .416 Rem and the .416 Rigby are roughly equivalent in power but quite different in pressure. Please don't make the mistake of using .416 Rem data to load a .416 Rigby.

Also I'd caution about accepting load data over a forum because of the possibility of a typo error.

Always consult a loading manual published by a reputable mfr of components.

I think it will work fine in your 416 Rigby -- the 416RemMag folks use the 300's frequently for elk and love the results -- just bowls them over. [Big Grin]

Like yourself, I shoot a 416 Rigby also and I am impressed with you choice of firearms -- I will have to keep you in mind when discussing "recoil sensitivity" with the macho-but-sensitive folks! [Wink]

One slight variation -- I use Barnes X 325 grainers in my 416 Rigby, per Barnes #3 2,899 fps and shoots flatter than all get out! [Smile]

Toad Bartell?? Ohhh, that hurts. [Big Grin]

I am shooting 86 grs. Varget, gets me 2800-2820 fps out of my 24" barrel. I have had bad results with 81 grs. H4895 (2750 fps), so I stick with the Varget load. Almost had the chance last night to see this load perform on a 6 pt. bull elk, but it wansn't meant to be. [Frown]

Sorry Judy!

I am refering to the 416 Rem.
I don't know the Riby well enough to suggest a load.
I would recomend the 350 gr. X for the Rigby. the Rigby can push the 350gr. fast enough for most long shots while offering incredible straight line and deep penetration. Huge killing power has been associated with this load.

This combination is one of the greatest all around loads available... Period!

I am envious of your Rigby!

The 350 Barnes X has been terrific ballistically in .416 Rigby. With a light load of 98.0 grains of IMR 4350 using Fed 215s in Norma cases they make 2688 fps and some 5600 fpe.

With their high BC (0.521) the trajectory is better than 250s in .338 Win Mag, and the impact energy on water jugs at 100 to 200 yards is amazing! They make terrific vertical geyers on gallon jugs.

Looking forward to the fall season to see how they do on lighter game at these velocities. Certainly plenty for North American game.

Interestingly, my rifle prints 350 Speer Hot Cores at the same impact point up to 200 yards for practice ammo.

Thanks for the info... A couple of years ago I used IMR4064 as per Barnes Nr 2 and got variations in initial velocity of more than 200 f/s, but I did not have enough powder and time to find out where the problem was and I suspected the bullets or a slow twist. Knowing that you guys got reasonable results with other powders, I may try again...

PS Sorry for the elk... The misnomer was a typo, no intention to mingle biology with your ancestral genes...

Hi folks,

take 400gr bullets for moose. I used 325gr X on African antelopes. They didn't have enough penetration even on broadside shots.

Take the largest case, stuff in the most powder behind the biggest bullet and go to town!

Inspector I'm sorry but I have to call Bull shit! You are saying a 325 gr bullet will not penetrate on an antelope. There are lots of people out there with a lot more experince than I have with 416's but I have a little. I've used 300 gr X's 350 gr Speer's and 400 gr Hornady's in my 416 Rem.I've shot moose and black bear with the 300 & 350 gr bullets.I have never recovered a bullet shot at game.They all exit and leave a hole you can stick your fist in.Tremendous wound channels with both bullets.

While it is possible that you had a bullet failure or two with 325gr. X bullets from my experience with 300 gr. X bullets I would have to say penetration is not a problem issue from any shot angle.

The 350 gr X has a well established reputation for being enough bullet for Cape Buffalo never mind mid sized game.

You may have a rifle problem (bullet stability problem). Contact a good gunsmith.

I've used the 300 grain X on about ten head of game, from impala thru crocodile, and buffalo. To date I've only recovered one bullet, that being from the off side of a cape buffalo. Unlike the flower-like pictures of expended bullets one often sees, the one slug that I retrieved looked more like a pencil eraser. My experience is that these bullets are rather soft, opening easily and kill quickly. Everything that I've shot with it has been a one shot kill. They should work well on moose in that they will penetrate the chest of a cape buffalo, yet flatten impala without a quiver.

How to Feel Like a Weanie:

As I was about to get off the board and go out in the garage and handload some 243 rounds, I read a post about a WOMAN in Michigan asking about loads for her 416!

Talk about making a guy feel like a Weanie!

Think instead I will take a hint from Inspector Callahan and just go put Dirty Harry on the VCR and call it a night instead.

Judy, good luck on that 416. At the moment I feel like a muzzle blast off of a 416 will probably cause more terminal performance than a 243 will! [Frown]
