FAVORITE OBSCURE HUNTING CALIBER
Well, obscure caliber hunting rifles, have a 45-70 which I promise never to take to Africa, a 338-06 which is on the verge of becoming common, so I guess my obscure gun would be [and this should be no surprise], a 333-OKH that has yet to go afield. I rather fancy owning a gun that may have been handled by Elmer, as it was made by C.M. O'Neil. I am a little reluctant to shoot it much as at present the only bullets I have are Barnes of the same vintage as the gun.

If Elmer didn't say it, it probably ain't true.

It is not as obscure as other cartridges mentioned but I dearly love the .300 H&H. It will take anything in North America. And from reading these threads it looks like it will take almost anything in Africa. I have had mine for about 20 years now.

I'm really looking forward to using a .35 Remington that will be arriving soon. It's a 24" barreled Marlin lever gun.

A friend of mine hunts elk with a 338/378 K.T. What a wicked elk rifle, or what ever gets in the way for that matter.
What action is your built on?
I think his first one was a Sako, but a gun smith left it on the Fowl out to long and pitted the barrel.(So they thought) So they built the second one on Weatherby action. He likes the exstractor better on that action.
The first one ended up in the hands of the Gunsmith I use now. Who says it was not pitted at all it was still fowled. He hunts and shoots with says it's a dream to shoot.

My grandfather had a 4 barrel 8/10 ga black powder shot gun.It was a drag ass market hunters gun.big ear hammers and cap.a top 8 ga.and lower 10 ga. fired at once.If it all four went off as they did at times .It picked him up and sent him back 15 feet or so flat on his back.I shot 1 barrel a 10 ga with a light load at age ten and it knoked me down. That was enough for me. unloaded it was 18 pounds.

My thinking is a 375 Whelem next.

BER007,
I tested 225,250 Nosler Part. and 280 Swifts. I got 3225fps with the 225, 3150 with the 250. The 280 shot the best,.5 inch at 2800fps and very mild. Thats what i used on my elk this year with great results. Can't tell you what the bullet looked like as it passed thru at 340 yards. It has replaced my 338win for hunting elk.

over.40,

Many thanks, sounds like very nice caliber.
I understand why this caliber has replaced your .338 Win for elk.

Don't own one, but hunted with a friend's Marlin in 32-40. The ammo was old and green, really glad I didn't have to shoot it.
Good luck and good shooting

But I'd like to know which obscure calibers (wildcat calibers, obsolete calibers,....) do you use to hunt?

I add one more caliber.

This is a French caliber nearly unknown even for French people.

6X62 R Frres
Bullet Nosler Ball-tip 95 gr
Case Men.
Primers CCI200
Powder RL15 50 gr
Velocity 3288 fps
Pressure 60870 PSI

Nice isn't it.

6X62 R Frres

Not the least. It is an exclusively German development by Gnter Frres (once director of construction and development of DWM beatae memoriae), concocted at the end of the 1970s, and first factory produced as the rimless 6 x 62 Frres in 1984 by MEN. The rimmed sister appeared either in 1985 or 1992.

PS: what kind of 8 x 60 S ammo do you use in Belgium ? Only RWS (with DK or H-Mantel bullet), or also some stocks of older FN-Browning (loaded for them by Norma)

carcano91,

Thanks to give more details on this cartridge. But I guess it is obscur in Germany too. Have you find some details regarding .700 Juggernaut?

I haven't a 8X60 S but only RWS brass are used for handloading. I have seen only 4 differents bullets 150gr SP, 170gr SP, 180 KS and 187gr HKM. Made by Speer or RWS SK and HMK

The orlder cartridges I have shot from FN-Browning were 9MM rounds made in 1965. This with good results.

It is a specialist cartridge and handicapped by the German federal hunting law which stipulates a minimum 6,5 mm bullet diameter if the cartridge is to be legal on cloven hoof game (roe deer is exempt). In Austria however, the 6x62 Frres and the .244 Remington are popular for chamois hunting.

I have only seen the .700 Nitro Express in Barnes' Cartridges of the World.

The RWS-made 8 x 60 S ammo is hideously expensive. I own a nice French civilian MAS 36 sporter from 1947, and it shoots well with old Sellier & Bellot 8x60 Magnum FMJ ammo.

XRing, My 338/378 used to be a 458 win mag.
it was supposed to be a Whitworth, however the original owner discovered it wasn't. So i bought it and hunted with it until Elmer convinced me I had to have the keith.
It has a heavy Douglas bull barrel 27 inches.
Have made my most spectacular kills with this
rifle.

The 350 RM is of course the best compromise: the legendary killing abilities of the 9,3X62 in a light package.
It striked again this week end: five one shot kills on Red Deer and Wild Boars, from about 50 to 250 meters...

I seem to have gravitated to the 6mm; a 6mm-284 and a 6x47mm. Both are a pleasure to shoot, each in its own way.

Ber007,
Years ago I had a German Martini in 9.5 x 47R. It shot regular .375 dia bullets. A rather short case formed from .43 Mauser. Cartridges of the World lists this caliber as an old target number.
Anyway, I didn't have a chronograph in those days, but ballistics were probably in line with the old .38-55 black powder loads even though I loaded it with IMR 4198.
I shot lots of smaller stuff with it, but never connected on the feral pigs or deer.
Is this one obscure enough?
