FAVORITE OBSCURE HUNTING CALIBER
Hi All,

When I look at messages regarding calibers used to hunt, I can see most of the time same calibers (.375 H&h,.458 Win Mag,...). I have nothing against these calibers because I use these myself. But I'd like to know which obscure calibers (wildcat calibers, obsolete calibers,....) do you use to hunt?

BER007,
I would have to say my 350 Griffin&Howe Imp. Easy to make and Super Performance. I'm having a 450 G&A built now. I can't wait to get it back and start testing.

For me it's the 7.65mm Argentine (or Belgian) Mauser. It's almost identical to the standard .308 in appearance and ballistics.

My 35 whelen ackley improved is going to be re-chambered to a 350 Rigby. Going from somewhat obscure, to a bit more obscure.

For me it is one of my .41 caliber wildcats. I really enjoy shooting my .41GNR which is a full length .44RemMag necked to .41. I shoot 250-265gr hadrcast GC bullets from BearTooth or CPBT. I can and do easily get 1400fps out of a custom 8 inch SBH.
Same goes for my .41GNR#2 which is a full length .445SuperMag necked to .41. Same bullets at 1600 out of a custom 14 inch T/C Contender. Of the two I think I like the .41GNR#2 most . It is just a fun round to shoot.

Crawfish, was that a mis-print? A more powerful cartride, same bullets + a 75% longer barrel and only 200 more fps than the standard GNR? I am not being nit picky. I was thinking of getting the #2 but if there is no real gain I would get the regular GNR.

My .375 Taylor, a .338 Win Mag. necked up to take .375 caliber bullets. Does everything the .375 H&H will do in a standard length action. Recoil is quite mild compared to my .375 H&H and the ES with 300 gr. bullets is 6 FPS, 9FPS with 270 gr. bullets. Accuracy is more than sufficient for the type of game it is suited for.
I'm hoping for a moose hunt next fall to try it out on game.

8x60 and 9,3x57. They do their job, as any caliber with proper bullet and proper load for the proper job.

I dont care for calibers as such, but they will have to do a good job. Choosing obsolete calibers is a good way of getting fine rifle for a cheap price...

Best regards,

Fritz

7,65 Argentine Mauser with 180 grs. RN Hornady bullet for red deer and jabali (feral hog?); 9,3x62 Mauser / 258 H-Mantel RWS with the same game; 9,3x64 Brenneke / 286 gr SP RWS bullet; 6,5x54 MS / 140 and 160 RN bullet in Axis and Dama deer. All excellent.

My favorites are:
6.82X62 for deer etc.
338/416 Taylor for elk and plains game
416/8mm Rem Mag for anything larger

There's nothing like hunting with a wildcat no one else has

I almost forgot my 257 Ackley Unimproved for light game.

Wow I just took an inventory. I don't have any obscure cal.'s I better go out and buy a new rifle so I can play on this post. My most obscure is a 45-70 which was odd when I got it, but with the guide gun out now it's really made a come back.
I'm shopping for a 375H&H

I don't own one but there is a fondness in my heart for the very good little 6.5x54 Mannlicher-Schoenauer. Is this cartridge still popular in Germany or elsewhere?

I love to hunt with a .33Win, nice performance & most people have never heard of it. Also like the old 38-55 Savage, my 12year old won't try anything but his .303Savage featerweight downloaded to 150gns @ 1800fps.

It is obscure for North America: 9.3X74R.

BER007,

I can't add obscure caliber from my inventory. But for me the most obscure caliber is .700 Juggernaut.

It's a caliber "under construction" or only single production. I have no details on it for the moment. I don't know how many rifles have been built in this caliber. It is too much for me!!!!!

.700 Juggernaut (the most powerful rifle cartridge ever made) I don't know if it is a joke or not. But I'm waiting more details.

Specifications Actual Diameter .700
Bullet Weight (Grains) 1200
Average Velocity (Muzzle)(Max) 2,300(1200gr)
Average Energy (Muzzle)(Max) 15,000(1200gr)
Effective Range (yards) 0-200
Year Introduced 2000 (proposed plan)
Status Wildcat
Recoil (12.25 lb rifle)(1200gr) ??.?? > 175 ft/lbs
Powder Charge approx. 250grs

If someone can light us on this. It'll become less obscure for me.

Well after reading BER007's last post one must wonder how long it will be before the video's get here of Saeed's friends shooting he's new .700 Juggernaut. I'm sure he and Walter have read that post and are just drowling! After the T Rex it might get harder to find willing practice dumbies.I always said I was afraid of no gun, but have to admit after seeing his vedoes. I would flinch when I first pulled the trigger on that T Rex I'm sure!

When I was a kid long, long ago, steeped in Elmer Keith's writings, I was contemptuous of this cartridge. Even more so when a friend's Colt New Service was bewilderingly inaccurate. But, recent experience with in whitetail deer hunting with a Ruger Blackhawk, and "just plinking" with a Winchester Model 92 has been most pleasing. I use "magnum"-level loads in the Blackhawk, and ordinary lead loads in the carbine. The cartridge? Believe it or not, the .38-40 W.C.F.

I have only heard of the .700 Juggernaut here on this thread. I'm in Montana, and never yet hunted Africa So I don't have all that much expierence shooting gaint rifles. The biggest I have shot is a 416 Rigby. A baby gun next to some of these guns they shoot.
I was just funning with Saeed as I'm sure he will see this thread.
Have you checked out the video section of this sight? The video's of Saeed's friends shooting the .577 T Rex are great!

Yes, It was my first contact a few months ago with Accuratereloading Website. But the most impressive was Hanz and his 700 NE.

I use a 338-06 most of the time...however weatherby seems to have semi-domesticated it. I also use a 45-70 and my favorite model 99 in .300 savage. My son shoots a customized(hacked) SMLE in .303 brit.

Paladin,

Belive it or not,Elmer Keith thought quite highly of the 38/40 WCF as far as handguns and small game were concerned.Talks about it quite a bit in his book "Sixguns",which every handgunner should own.
