bobby7321Suggestions for a Montana deer/elk hunt
So me and my good buddy want to plan a trip to Montana and take our dads. We're in our 30s and the dads are in their 60s. We aren't quite sure if we want to go for elk, deer, or antelope or a combo. The idea is in its first stages of planning.
I personally have always put in for MT goat and sheep but never for the other species. So I'm really starting from scratch when it comes to units or areas to look at.
Ideally it would be either a DIY hunt (possibly using the block management program) or maybe a semi-guided / drop camp type hunt. We are trying to stay away from a fully guided hunt, just so we can focus on just having a father/son type camp. Just us, our dads, and some beautiful country.
Trophy quality is not a priority. Just somewhere where we can see some critters, and some have a good time.
If anyone has any suggestions, we'd greatly appreciate it.
thanks!

buckeyeshooterBe positive you are in a non-wolf area. The Rockies have lost a lot of game to the wolves. I frankly would go somewhere else as there is little game there as compared to what was there before the wolf.

farbedoI would encourage you to go to this link and get the numbers for yourself.
http://fwp.mt.gov/fishAndWildl...pulationDistributionSome areas have declined, others are the same, still others have more elk than previous surveys. A blanket statement that all the elk have been eaten by wolves isn't accurate. There is some very good hunting to be had.
PM me if you want a few suggestions. I grew up in the Great Falls area and still hunt my home state every year even if it is as a non-resident.

PeglegTake a look at the area just west of Dillon. That is a migration route for elk and they have some monster mule deer in that area. Public hunting.
