Actually I would rather have a 338 or 375 pushing a heavy bullet at 2600 fps than any 300 mag for bear hunting. Truth is that the lowly .22 rimfire often penetrates deeper than the .223 with varmint bullets. The standard velocity 22 rounds are well known to penetrate deeper than the high velocity rounds and this is atributed to the sound barrier somehow. I have seen many times the 7MM Rem mag fail to give the penetration you easily get with the 30-06 with similar bullets. The 300 Win mag I had never fully penetrated medium sized feral hogs with the 150 grain corelokt though my 7MM mauser always did with the 140 grain corelokt. The 300 was messier but not anywhere near as consistant.
