JeffPAlaskan dall sheep hunt part 1/Part 2 + 3 added
Well the day I thought would never get here, arrived.Monday Aug 30th.
I got to the airport and it still did not feel real yet.The wait at Bradley
was long but I survived the TSA check in process. We flew to Detroit
no problem and connected into Anc on time.My friend Wayne met me
at the airport and we went to his house for dinner and to exchange
lies.Rose,Waynes wife, made an awesome Halibut dinner.Very nice start
to a hunt...get fat. After dinner I went to my hotel room to go through
my gear and get my bags set for the bush flight in the AM.Tom Bailer
a guide for my outfitter called my room. The 9:00AM flight in had been
delayed to @ 1:00PM due to smoke from the fires.Crap.
It ended up ok as we did get in around 2:00.We had a 3 hour ride to
camp in an old power wagon.John Latham uses the vehicle to drive up
to sheep camp.We got our gear settled and tested our rifles for zero.
I fired a three shot group...good to go.The other hunter,Bryan had a
little trouble but he got his 300 Dakota and 375 where he felt good.
Bryan was going to hunt sheep, grizz, blk bear, bou, moose, wolf.
I had a sheep tag and wolf.
First day was great. It was lightly raining, but we topped out after a 6 mile
walk up a creek behind camp.We spotted 2 rams.A 7/8th and a full
curl.Loryn,my guide, thought we could do better as we had 10 days.We
noted his location and dubbed him my "insurance ram".We continued on but only saw ewes and lambs the rest of the day.
Day 2 it also was raining. We hunted hard and saw 1/4,1/2,3/4 curls
with lots of ewes/lambs but no legal sheep.
Day three we wake up to snow.We relaxed in camp hopeing for a
melt as white sheep/white falling snow makes for tough hunting
