Shucks! I saw BushPilot's thread on the African Hunting forum and read it... And the various responses to his post just confirm it -- for the critters I pursue in the great state of Virginia, I just don't need a 270 Winnie or a 30-06. My 7x57 will do just fine.

And here I was, having almost convinced myself (thorough selective reading over the past few months) that I had to have that 270, or that 30-06!!!

Help me out, gentle readers! Tell me why I DO NEED that other rifle!

Transition!!!! Eventually you will wear that 7x57 out or it will need to go to the 'smiths for some work so you will need another rifle you can "transition" into...might as well start getting your transition rifle into shape before you really need it.

Because itï¿½s fun! "Variatio delectat", variation is a pleasure. For me that would be reason enough.

Another more practical reason is to have rifles for several purposes. Your 7x57 can you use for close distances or general purpose, but if you take a .270, you can equip it with a good scope for longer distances in open areas. There are thousands of possibilties with many rifles. You just customize them for specialized purposes.

1.)To explore the wonderful world of ballistics through the thoughtful pursuit of various calibers and rifles.
2.)To settle once and for all, which really is the better rifle: the .270 or the -'06.
3.)To see if, as reported, the .270 and -'06
really do destroy more meat for eating, and kill "deader" than the 7x57!
4.)The all-American reason......
Because it creates more jobs! (for bullet, powder, rifle, scope and die makers).
5.) Finally, because, if it was good enough for O'Connor, by golly, it's good 'nough for me!

Dogger, rather than duplicating your efforts with a 270 (and even a 30-06), why not go "classic" and "bigger" at the same time by rebarreling a LA M77... 35 Whelen, or, more in keeping with your 7x57, a 9.3x62... that'd make yours a perfect "Teutonic" pair for anything in NA... and then some.

You don't! More is not allways best. Rifles are a bit like girls in a way. Your first you (normaly) cherish and spend hours experimenting with. With each addition you get to realise they all do basicaly the same thing and after the initial exploration interest wanes. It's the law of diminishing returns.

Having said that there is something to be said for specialisation. I have a morning rifle, an evening rifle, a travel rifle, a knockabout rifle and a big rifle. I am currently searching for the same in women but doubt if I have the same energy.

Think of the 7x57 as a down-sized '06 considering sectional densities of bullets and their velocities(when handloaded anyway). And when not handloaded, it's still perfect for the vast majority of hunting.

For shooting at game in VA the 7x57 is all you will ever NEED. For shooting game here in MN I thought all I needed was a 12ga shotgun, so I got one. With that said, now I'm way past need and into full scale WANT, WANT, WANT!! I wanted a .280 rem, a .270 win, a 6.5-06, a 6.5-284, a 6.5x55, a 6.5-257 roberts improved, and a 7x57 improved(not a 30-06 in the bunch.....yet). So if you ask me, stick with that 7x57 until you WANT something new.

Kind of curious. If you want another rifle, why buy something so close to what you have?
Go down or up, like 223 or 375, etc. Just doesn't make sense to buy another rifle, if it's very close to what you have.

If you WANT another rifle, then go a lot bigger, or a lot smaller. Meaning either a .22 bore or a big bore.

Why get a rifle that will compete with your 7x57?

A really big boomer makes no sense in Virginia... but a .358 Winchester would be a great rifle on the Massanutten mountain for black bear. Perhaps a 338-06... or a .348 Winchester if I could find one.

You are right! I don't NEED another rifle. I WANT one!! Besides, by purchasing another rifle I am helping keep the economy strong for the War on Terrorism! Why, at this time in history, it would be unpatriotic not to purchase another rifle!! And reloading dies... and powder... and brass... and primers...

This line of reasoning works well on me. I wonder if it will work on the spouse-unit??

I have lot's of medium bores, 7x57 7mm08 270 6.5x55 280 7mm Rem mag 30-06, but if the only rifle I had was a 7x57, I would try to expand my calibers more. Go for a .223, then your next rifle should be a 338 mag, 35 whelen etc..

First you plan your east coast battery, then your gulf coast battery, then your western battery, an alaskan battery and Africa--heck collecting a european battery or one from central asia might lead to some exciting travel
