Hey Tod, Congratulations on the kill.
I'm wondering the same as Boyd, what did the bullet path look like? How would you rate it to other bullets you have used, once it got into the Bear? Have you used any other MatchKings on bears?
Hey Todd, OK, same questions about the Accubond???

pagrisNow that the truth is out, perhaps you can tell us Tod - would you take a 590 yard shot at a bear if the opportunity presented itself? Sure seems like you got some supporters who think you could/should - what do you think, since you started all of this? Got to go - just saw a woodchuck on the back forty that will also square about 7 ft!

todbartell Hot Core ,
I hit him quartering towards, between his right shoulder and his front brisket. Bullet took top of the heart/aorta off, through the lungs, liver, and a piece of stomach, were it exited between two ribs. I knew I had hit him well, there was a loud bullet impact slap as it hit him @ almost 2600 fps. He swapped ends and ran maybe 10 yards, where he stumbled and fell on a log pile, coming to rest on his back. He was stone dead before the muzzle blast had stopped its echo. Good blood trail, from the entrance. I think bullet performance couldn't of been any better IMO.
pagris,
Would I take a 590 yard shot on a bear? No way, never, doesn't matter what the situation.

That is a looong ways to be shooting at something with sharp teeth and claws.
![[Eek!]](images/icons/shocked.gif)
I originally spotted this bear from 200-220 yards, and would of stalked closer than the 130 I did end up shooting from, but he either heard me or smelled me, and stopped feeding, turning towards me. Of the 13 black bears I've shot, this was the 2nd furthest shot yet.
Good hunting (and this was
just a joke, don't anybody go nuts)

Glad to hear that. My opinion of you as a hunter has improved considerably. Strangely quiet from your ridiculously-long-distance-shooting fan club, though, I note.
But 7 feet? Looking at the guy, you sure you're not spinning another yarn?

Hot CoreHey Todd, Thank you for the info on the Accubond. I know a lot of people are "hoping" for that kind of in-and-out performance from them.

Others' hunting ethics are not for you to judge. You have no idea of the conditions of the hunt and you have no idea about the level of marksmanship ability of the person doing the shooting.
Maybe you should learn to shoot farther than you ever intend to? That would do two things.
1) Make you a better marksman, regardless of the distance at which you choose to kill game.
2) Give you some credibility from which to launch judgement.

lhondaWe differ in opinion; I can live with that. I still contend that for the conditions and circumstance originally desribed, a 590 yard shot would have been absurd and unethical. Period. Argue away if you feel the need, but nothing you say will make me change my mind on that point, same goes the other way for you, I'm sure. I stated my feeling, you yours. There it is. Any questions?

Gator1I think that all of Todds story is true. When he shot at the Bear he thought it was a seven footer at 590 yards. In reality it was only 130 yards.

ColeIs shooting game at 500 yards hunting ? OR something else?

B17GI think it is important to take people's words on what they do. It is called trust.
I always give people respect and trust them until they give me a reason not to anymore.
Some of us now look a little foolish, defending " a 590 yd shot" from the doubters.
It is them we owe an apology to.
They were right, we were wrong.
Just as a note, want to explain any logical reason for telling a bunch of BS to those that respected your words, and abilities??

Middle Age Fat ManFor those of you who have not had the experience of tracking of a wounded bear in thick alders, go ahead and try it sometime.
Happy to see the shooter has his bear.
However I would pass before taking a longggg shot on a bear. Too much can happen before you find them. Tracking your bear with the light of AA maglight starts to get into the realm of a spiritual experience.

CustomstoxTod,
Thanks for the laugh. I think you proved one thing here other than you have devilish sense of humor. We take OUR opinions way too seriously when it comes to discussions regarding other peoples actions.
Nice bear and have a good weekend.
