That one was in Oak Ridge in Morris County, on the edge of Sussex County, I believe.

JEFFERSON — The hunter was almost matter-of-fact about the bear he shot on Friday, an animal the state Department of Environmental Protection said might be the largest black bear ever taken in New Jersey.

"I was out for deer, that was my primary goal," said Bruce Headley, as he walked up a hill behind his house toward the large storage shed where the bear, estimated to have a live weight of 829 pounds, filled a nearly 12-foot high opening in the shed. "Actually, I'm disappointed. I usually get two (deer) a year and it helps feed the family."

The story of the hunt is almost lost in Headley's telling of Friday's events, saying it took about three hours, three other people, lots of equipment and even more planning — right down to a chainsaw to help clear the path for the four-wheeler used to haul the beast out of the forest.

Headley, who has spent his entire life within talking distance of the house where he now lives in Jefferson, said he had seen the bear once before, but never in the woods.

"This past summer, I saw him just spread out, squatting under one of my apple trees," he explained of the bear, which had no tags or tattoo, indicating it had never been handled by humans before.

Great bear, but I wonder if they have some "better" pics of this true trophy? Pics posted here are really kinda sad for such a magnificent animal. Just wondering.

I did a lot of searching and couldn't find any decent pics. The hunter who killed this biggie was pretty old, so I doubt he even cared whether he took any in-the-field photos.

Ironically many dont know how to take a real nice pic with a trophy animal.

That is one huge bear, I only hope one of these I get my WI permit..... one of these years!

Here's one they didn't catch ! Very domesticated I guess as he lived in a basement apartment !! Did he have his own TV ?

The 776 lb bear was taken in Montague , Sussex Co. It was a record but the record was broken the next day with the 829 lb !

No, that one was 776, taken by John Noon, a local taxidermist I know. It was the new state record, but not for long!
