M1TankerPLEASE HELP - Taxidermist has my mount and has disappeared!!!!
I need your help. In 2004 I was lucky enough to draw an oryx tag for the soldier only hunt on Ft Bliss, TX. I was able to shoot a very nice bull and took head and hide to Rio Grande Taxidermy in El Paso, TX to be mounted. Immediately after the hunt I was sent off to Ft Huachuca, AZ for a military school then on to Ft Carson, CO and then Iraq. During this time my wife kept in touch with the taxidermist for me to arrange for the mount delivery and such. But while I was in Iraq the shop seemed to disappear. No calls were answered and 2 certified letters my wife sent were returned.
Needless to say I am very upset about losing my mount. I am hoping somebody out there may know what happened to the shop. A name, address, phone number, or even a rumor would help. Here is the contact info I have for the shop. But I had a friend that recently arrived at Ft Bliss try and stop in and the shop appears to be closed up and empty.

Hopefully somebody out there can help me out.

kudu56Get a hold of the G&F dept., tell them, many taxidermists have to be licensed by the state. There are also laws concerning transporting game out of state.
Second, go to taxidermy.net, there is a forum there and make a post looking for the guy or his business. I hate to say it, but many taxidermists are liers, and crooks., There are some upstanding businessmen among thier ranks, but they are far and few between. I have had far more bad dealings with taxidermists than outfitters over the years.

That is such a crock of shit Kudu56. You make a blanket statement about a profession, not everyone in the taxidermy businesses are crooks and liars.

kudu56I said many. Not all, shit crock! Of the five I have used, only one has came through as promised, in cost, time frame, and quality. I have used him for 20 mounts and will continue to use him until he retires. The other four were liers, and crooks. One left the state with several heads after recieving deposits, he is now out of business, one would demand 1/2 the deposit before he would taking a mount, then it would be as long as two years to get a mount back, one mounted my mnt. goat, and used yellow eyes, wanted an additional $100 when the goat was done, and took 10 months to complete. Another agreed to do a pedistal mount on my sons sheep, promised 6 month turn-around, I was ok with 8 months, just so we got it before my son graduated from high school, well 1 1/2 years later and payed in full when dropped off, we got the sheep. I could go on and on, but then you know everything so I won't.

It is the trade, they do not police themselves, nor do many states have any strict laws or regulations regarding taxidermy work.
