Bill/OregonIt's what you used to give your college girlfriend on a regular basis, before you got old, married and started taking antidepressants.
Sorry.
It is a three-barreled long arm, typically two shotgun barrels on the top and a rifle barrel on the bottom, as pictured on the heading of this forum. Drilling derives from the German Dreiling, meaning three.
There is hope, even when your brain tells you there isn’t.

GerryBe kind; we all started at one time in our lives.....
Basically a double barrel SxS shotgun with a rifle barrel attached underneath the two SxS barrels. There are a number of variations on the theme from O/U w/side barrels, two rifle barrels and a shotgun barrel, or two rifle barrels and a shotgun (smooth bore barrel) etc., but basically a three barreled rifle/shotgun combination.
Net, you've got a SxS shotgun with its shot/slug potential and a rifle barrel underneath it for a rifled bullet.
Cheers,

vegard_dinoHehhe, well, you sa dit..realy made me feel old now Bill......
But, it is also as yousay a three barreled long arm. But, they are also to be found in two rifle calibers, do not need to be the same caliber and one shotgun. There are drillings with a over&under shotgun style, with a rifle barrel on the side also.
It was even made a "tropical drilling" for the German air force, I think it was, if I am not to old and forgot what it was, that it was in 2* 12/65 and a 9.3*74E.
The drilling is a bit odd, but it is,maybe, one of the best all round guns made. In my mind....just going after roe deer in heavy bush, one rife ready for the long shot and two ready for the fast closer shot.
It wil be the same for wild boar to, I guess, not done any in europe yet, but it was made to make the hunter ready, for all kinds of game, close or far away.
Cheers all

You bet it gets hunted. They all do. The sidelock was sold recently to pay medical bills. The box lock is a 1958 Sauer 3000 in 6.5X57R and 16ga with a Kreighoff 22 mag Extra eisntecklauf. I always wanted one with some master stock carving, and Dale Nygaard came up with this for me. I don't like the heavy carving and prefer this type of "stock engraving".
Husq 98...
That looks more like a badger to me...

I think Zoli and Sabatti make drillings that are on the cheaper side, but hard to find in North America.
A new Merkel, Krieghoff, or Blaser is $5000-9500 on the cheap side if you can find one. NEW Sidelock or handmade drillings are $20000 or more.
Used market guns are $1000 to well the sky is the limit. Kittery trading post has an odd caliber drilling for $1000, but it's just that odd.
Most good quality fairly modern used guns are $3500 to 7000 new.

Rudy,
You KNOW I covet that drilling of yours.
I also envy Husq. 98's good hunting and European varieties.

The Letchner & I are becoming pretty good friends. This past fall I had real good luck with it on ducks & pheasants. This April I hope to be able to take a turkey with it and this fall we'll be together looking for grouse, bushytails and Whitetails. Maybe I should shoot a carp with it for my Wisconsin MacNab.
"Hunting with a classic" you could not have said it any better.
My American Water Spaniel & my drilling, I'm loving it!!!

vegard_dinoHi
Thanks for showing some superb drillings!!
To me, the drilling is a super hunting gun/rifle. It can do it all.
well, maybe not all things, but really, it is a super gun to bring in the field, just thin og stalking boar, deer or roe deer, and then a hare or a bird comes along...
Cheers all

Nice, I like em all. And the not as common Bockdrilling, Blaser BD880, 20ga over 30-06 w/22 Hornet on the side. Works great for the high seat, Waidmannsheil, Dom.

Bob GThe real word for these firearms is Dreiling. The word drei means 3 in German. A vierling is a 4 barrel firearm. It also can have many different configurations. The word drilling came from the real word being mispronounced and it stuck.
Do it right the first time.

homebrewerWhat's a drilling? A really, really expensive SxS shotgun with a rifled barrel under the shotgun barrels. You'd have to be an executive at AIG to own one. But what them guys is gettin' is best classified as a reaming...
I dunno homebrewer, what would you pay for two shotguns and a rifle? Here's an older drilling, I have tops $1000- in this one (w/o the scope), 'course I'm at a slight advantage being here in the Fatherland
