vegard_dinoDrillings in Africa......
Hi all
Just asking, do anyone use the drilling on a safari today?
I know it was used back in the old day´s, but what about today?
I am asking coz I am seeking for a drilling with 2* 9.3*74R and one shotgun barrel, and also bring it with me to Africa.
Thanks for looking

luv2safariI used a Merkel 12/12/9.3X74R drilling and took PG and Buffalo. It is a great African gun, and it also filled the pot with guinea and francolin.
That DR drilling should be a fantastic choice. I loaded 286 Woodleigh solids for the buffalo and Norma 285 Oryx for everything else.
If I had a 12 gauge Drilling I think it would be perfect for Africa.....
If you own a gun and you are not a member of the NRA and other pro 2nd amendment organizations then YOU are part of the problem.

AkshooterI took one of my drillings to Africa about a decade ago. I only shot one reedbuck with it but it performed great for that.

vegard_dinoHi all, thanks for the info and reply.
luv2saf"ari, you did not feel a bit "low on bullets, having only a single shot?
I am thinking it will give some tasty birds to the pot to.

ozhunterMost Drillings are 1x Rifle and 2x 12ga but yes the 2x 9.3x74 1x 12ga would be a great rifle for Africa.

vegard_dinoTru, most drillings was made with one rifle and 2 shotguns, but some was made with 2 rifle barrels.
A great African drilling!

brayhavenI built a 375 Taylor (375/338) for my hunting friend to take on a buff hunt. It's @ 10% hotter than the 375 H&H. He came back after the hunt & told me he needs a bigger gun. I built him a 458 Lott for his next trip....

.
He's an excellent hunter & shot. But I guess those guys are pretty hard to kill.
"Use Enough Gun" Robert Ruark.. who also said, cape buffalo look at you like you owe em money.

I definitely would want 2 rifle barrels. although for normal (non-dangerous game) hunting, I don't care much for double rifle drillings, mainly because I don't have any use for a single shot shotgun.. unless it's a flintlock

.

vegard_dinoYes...hard to take down the buff.
But as you say, on a hunt after non-dangerous game, a one drilling with one rifle barrel will do just fine. Maybe use a slug/paradox in one of the shotgun barrels.....

Now THAT is a drilling.

vegard,
The 9,3X74R did just fine with a well placed shot. I've killed three buffalo with it.

N E 450 No2My wife and I both took Drillings to Zimbabwe on our last 35 day Safari.
Both were Sauer 12x12x30/06, with scopes in claw mounts.
We shot several different kinds of birds including ducks.
The wife shot a very good kudu [with iron sights no less] that we spotted while bird hunting, and on another occasion while bird hunting [I was in a leopard blind] she shot a monster warthog.

vegard_dinoHi all
lov2safari, got you. Yes, it all has to do with a well placed shot. Was just thinking that a single shot will make you a bit weak, when hunting buff. You used slug/paradox in the shotgun barrel´s?
The 9.3*74R is good, I had a single shot in it, and just it for deer and moose in Norway and a black bear, just a great caliber.
NE450 No2, sure that was a great safari. Just what the drilling was made to du..Nice to hear that it is in use on safris today
Thanks for replying

ozhunterHave also taken some Buffalo with the bolt version of the 9.3x74R (the 9.3x62).
I would love to hunt Buff, Ele and Leopard with a 9.3x74 x 9.3x74 x 12GA.
Would make sure Brenneke Slugs shot accurately from it.
14 April 2009, 16:14
vegard_dinoHello ozhunter
Yes, the 9.3*62 is just great. I use one now on moose hunting in Norway.
A drilling in 2* 9.3*74R with a 12 or 16 ga under will be , maybe, the perfect moose, deer, elk, buff, Eland, kudu, leopard and lets not forget all the smaller deer and hogs and so one.
With a brenneke you will have "3" rifle barrel, and who can ask for more?

CaracalThe famous hunter Reinald von Meurers(i love his books) used a Drilling on several selfguided safaris in central/western africa, so that cannot be a bad weapon.

Ups, have to read his books then.
You know what kind of drilling he used?

CaracalI was a kaliber 7X57R,.22Hornet, 16ga.
He shoot some forest buffalos, kob and other big mammals with that gun.
15 April 2009, 00:18
vegard_dinoAh, forest dwarf buff with a 7*57R? WOW, not what I like to try.
But, a well placed shot will bring down all games.
But, I am sure it was a light and handy drilling, to carry around all day.
Wish we can se that one....What are the names on the books from him?

ozhunter"Hatari Times" No;14 has an article by Stefan Kohut who hunted Ethiopia for Lion and Leopard with a Drilling (2x9.3mm + 12gauge).
Quite interesting with Man eaters and a charge stopped by a 9.3mm bullet.
In Ian Nyshens book "Months of the Sun" he meets an old British hunter in the north of Mozambique that hunted Man eaters for a bounty using a Drilling.
15 April 2009, 14:20
CaracalThe only english book i know from R. von Meurers is "Buffalo, Elephant & Bongo".
15 April 2009, 15:45
vegard_dinoHi
Ok, then I have to find a copy of Hatari No14

But, maybe, a drilling is a good cat gun. You get 2 rifle calibers and the 3´rd to, if using a slug.
A 9.3 is close to the .375, and that is not a bad charge stopper, well not the best. But, with 2 fast bullets, I think it is a good gun. And, a drilling made back then, was well balanced to, just like a good shotgun. Not as heavy and bulky as the one made today.
Did the article say what 9.3 he was using?
Also, in the book of Ian Nyshens, did he tell what drilling the hunter did use?
Thank you Carcal, have to find that book!
Thanks for all the reply´s

Good to know more about drilling´s and there use in Africa.
Cheers all

My Blaser D 99 Duo 9,3x,9,3x20ga shoots 3" Brenneke slugs in as good a group at 50 yards as the 9,3 barrels.
The 20ga barrel kills grouse and turkeys pretty good too.

He's the green with jealously guy...
I now have a good friend in management at Blaser USA. Maybe I need to make a phone call. I can't imagine a better Africa combo gun, or a better combo in general.

vegard_dinoHi
That´s right. What a gun that will be...Africa, Asia, Europe and America.
Great gun and good calibers

AndersI have a Krieghoff 20/76-20/76 and 6,5x57R that I use quite a lot. Hopefully I will take this to RSA next year for some birds and smaller antilopes.

I haven't noticed any difference between 20/76 and 12/70, btw..
