Kenya: Lions Kill Five Cows in Fresh Attack On Livestock in Kajiado

Kurgat Marindany

31 December 2011

LIONS from the Nairobi National Park have killed five cows in a fresh attack in Nkamuriaki only two days after they killed several livestock on Tuesday.

The attack occurred yesterday morning after the local residents vowed to kill the stray lions if the Kenya Wildlife Services does not tame their cats. The animals killed included a bull and four cows.

Speaking to the press Mzee Emmanuel Tendere said the wild beasts had reduced the residents to paupers and they would not spare the beasts. A senior game warden from Nairobi National Park, Mark Cheruiyot confirmed the attack and said he had received information that the lions had eaten four goats in Empakasi area and one donkey in Sholingo village yesterday morning. Cheruiyot attributed the increased attacks on livestock to migration of grazers to villages after the recent rains.

He said people should learn to coexist with the wild animals instead of killing them. The KWS official said rangers have been sent to the area to control the marauding lions. He said the attack on the livestock by the lions on the wildlife corridor was over-stretching the otherwise lean KWS ranchers who also have a duty to protect tourists at the park against wild animals and al Shabaab insurgents in the country.

On Tuesday two lions strayed into Nkamuriaki village and killed seven donkeys, two cows and nine goats. Following the attack, some 150 morans went in search of the stray lions. Armed with spears, bows and arrows, they killed two and a third lion escaped into Nairobi National Park.
