I'm told of a 1891 6.5 Carcano that has been sporterised and I was wondering what average pricing went on them. The guy is asking $450 for it. At looking at it from the photos it doesn't look to be in the best shape. Claming its a $800 rifle. Let me know what you think. I'm getting my hands on it come this weekend.

It seems to have sold for $79.95, so your friend's "$800 rifle" appears to be overpriced by a considerable amount.

I'd say $150 tops and that is with a good bore. Remember too that the 1891 Carcano long rifle had gain twist rifling, and if you plan on shortening it you'll change the twist rate.

Thanks guys, you put my thoughts to rest. Thats what I thought. I know nothing about the guy. I have no idea why he is selling it. I dont know him personaly so I have/had no reason to trust him. But no reason not to trust him. Thats why I posted it.

If the original owner was Lee Harvey Oswald, it might be worth more.....

I remember italian military surplus rifles of the same caliber selling for $13.95 in New York State in 1958, a postman I was acquainted with bought one and had success hunting whitetails with it.

As it is it is really just worthless unless you have a spare military stock to drop it into.

James,if it shots half way decent and he has a number of clips offer him $60.00. It can make a nice project rifle. I've sporterized 2ea. in my life and killed mule deer with both. One I left in 6.5 Carcano and one was rechambered into a 6.5x55 single shot. A lot of fun was had in the doing. That stock may provide interesting hours of enjoyable experience. roger

ive had 3 6.5 carcanos not one could you hit a 50 gal drum at 50 yds with any regularity, but some claim they own one that shoots ok, you need the clips because they are controlled feed and are a pain to shoot one at a time. the first one i had was 16.00 and included 200 rds ammo mail order. a place called hunters lodge is now advertising model 1891 barereled recievers 10 for $49.50, they have some rifles for $225 but didnt say which caliber in the add

were your barrels worn out? I have shot several Carcano versions from musket to IWW rifle and both are quite accurate, if you wait sometime between the shots for barrel cooling and you use bullets of the proper diam
Obviously they are not as accurate as a swedish mauser but a 50 gal drum @ 50 yds was a joke for them

That rifle is not worth 20 dollars & that is generous! Personally I would not give 10.00 for any carcano.

The model 1891/41(EDITED) Carcano is not gain twist rifled. I bought a sporterized one for 60.00 a couple years ago. It has rem 700 open sights and I shoot five shot 100 yd groups of 3 inches with it when loaded with the 160 gr Hornady .268 bullets, daughter has shot several 1.5 in groups. If it was unaltered military I might give a 100.00 for it. sorry only picture I have right now

Bobster you are indeed correct, should have read m91/41 are NOT gain twist, which is what I own. Now you know what 12 hours of work and a couple beers will do to you! Thanks for correcting me, I will edit my post. Scot

I owned(past) a 788 remington with a sycamore stock and have seen a couple other 788's with same, must have been a birch shortage.

A friend and I turned a carcano into a 35 rem. I had a used 35 barrel and a $25 carcano, some sights out of my take-off box. I borrowed a 35 cal throater to be able to seat spitzers well out, and made a very neat little rig. I think it still might be worth the $25 after mucking around with it.

This is why untouched Carcano military stocks and handguard SETS are worth 4 time what a Bubbaed gun is worth. If the guy thinks the gun is worth $800 I have a 7.35 that I will sell to him with dies and brass for $400. My dad bought one in 56 for $12.95 and did the same thing. He sanded the stock and put Tung Oil on it and it still is not totaly dry. The ammo at the time ran about $2/100 with clips. The clips now run anywere from $5 to $10 EACH. If you don't have a clip it is a single shot. People just shot the things and let the clips hit the ground. Same thing with the Hug Mod 95 8x56R.
