M70 7mm STW value?
Found an excellent condition New Haven M70 "classic spotter" in 7mm STW, appears to have been shot very little. Bell and Carlson stock, and blued. Asking is $500, it seems like that should be a good buy right?

I like the looks of the STW on paper and have a soft spot for weird/neglected calibers...

Anybody have experience with the factory M70 in 7mm-STW? I don't want to have to sink a bunch of $$$ into it to have a decent shooter

That is an absolute steal! Especially if it has had only a few rounds through it. It's a hunting caliber. Throats can get lizard scaly after only a couple hundred round due to how over bore it is. That gun could be resold, if in nice shape, for twice your cost. I believe the action can be rebarreled to any of the 3.6" belted mag rounds without modification. You could go 300 or 375 H&H, 300 or 340 Weatherby, etc. no problem. The action on that rifle, alone, is worth more than $500. Lucky dog! I see those listed in the $1000-$1200 range. They are pretty hard to come by, as not many were made.

FISH!!

Heed the words of Winston Smith in Orwell's 1984:

"Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right."

I don't want to scare you off with my over bore comment. If a fellow just sights his rifle in every year, and hunts, such a rifle's barrel should last a lifetime. I just wouldn't go crazy shooting all the time for fun. Weatherby just came out with their 6.5, as did Nosler. I don't know how popular they will end up being. Point blank range will be way out there.

Ha, don't give me too much credit! I asked for a price, sans scope/mounts and that's what he came up with... now I'm looking forward to seeing how it turns out

I love the 7mm STW. I did not like the time I got a vicious scope crease when I was 15. I was literally was hollerin that I was blind, due to all the blood in my eyes.

I will one inherit that rifle on a rifles inc. platform. I think it weight 7 lbs all in.

I have a M70 Loredo 7 STW and wouldn't trade it for all of Midas' gold. It's a pussy cat to shoot even with stiff 160 loads.

Great deal.

I picked up an older laminate stocked factory Sendero for 525 that was in excellent shape. Shoots Federal 150gr loads around 1" on average at 200yds. When or if I manage to run through the other 10 boxes I got on clearance maybe I'll work up a load. Till then I just use it a couple times a year to set out and wait for hogs to try and slip across our back pasture.

Excellent deal.
I paid about that for a 7mm STW ten years ago. It is in the process of becoming a 9.3 x 70 Expert Magnum. With a simple change of floor plate, and Magazine, you are ready to become a 300 RUM, 404 Jeffery, etc.
