Sounds like the 270 to me.

If I don't sell the 338, then there is no point to me selling any of my guns, as that is probably the one I'd get the most for.

The H&R buffalo classic doesn't have a bolt. It's a single shot break open action and I've never seen any pins creaping out anywgere.

I may however still sell the BC if I find a decent 270 for around $300 or maybe I'll try a 308 since I've never owned one yet

If I lived in your neck of the woods, I would keep the 35 whelen. I'm a big bore nut, there is just something about those big bullets and the big hole in the muzzle. The 35 is good for 300 yd hunting with the right loads. Now, if you lived in Wyoming or some place like that the 270 would make more sense.

I would swear under oath that you can never go wrong with a .270 or 30-06 for game under 1000 pounds give or take a hundred...

Getting a rifle in a cartridge like 308 "Because you've never had one" is a silly reason to choose a chambering.

asking us to help you choose between a 270winchester and a 35whelen is equally silly.

I agree with those above who tell you to split the difference
and get a 30-06.

There are a very few things that you can do with a 270 that you cannot do as well with a 30-06.
There are also a very few things that a 35whelen will do better than a 30-06 will.

But the 30-06 does a better job at doing 35whelen things
than a 270 will do, and the same can be said of a 30-06
trying to do those few "270win" things better than a 35whelen can.

If you can only have one rifle you can do far worse than a 30-06.
Those claiming that you can have one rifle in any other chambering?
You may presume an insulting remark about their intelligence and/or wisdom, that frankly I don't consider

Well maybe. I have a 270 and 35W. I've avoided the 30-06 because it's so...well, universal. I'll take my two cartridges and put them to work where the situation demands. Could I do it all just as well with the 30-06. Maybe..., but where's the fun in that?

Well I found my rifle.
I did a trade and gave them my 45-70, 338, and 475 linebaugh. I found an older used Rem 700 with a nice wood stock. the bolt was the smoothest I've felt, the barrel was very smooth and cleaned very well, the only rust was a couple shallow spots the size of a grain of powder, and I knew it was the one I was going to get. It was listed for $475 and I told them I'ld buy it for $430. They went for it.
Now I just need to wait for the background check to go through.
Oh yeah, it's a 30-06.
A while ago, I gave a bunch of 30 cal bullets to a friend along with 30-06 dies so he could try reloading, but I don't think he'll ever get into it, so I might ask for them back.

338? Are you kidding me, you have a 338 and are keeping the shitty 270?

You can shoot 185 Grain Barnex X bullets in the 338.

But the most inportant 338 fact is that you can shoot 275 grain bullets in the 338.

Well I would have covered all bases by getting a 270 and a 35 Whelen. However you made the right choice in getting a 30-06 though I hope you got a nice scope and some change back on the trade.

Personally I would lean to the 270 unless you are going to hunt the biggest of NorthAmerican animals on a regular basis.

well, I gave them the Nikon Prostaff on the 338 but kept my Ziess conquest z-plex recticle for my new rifle.
As far as caliber, It had no effect on my choice of this rifle I bought. I still would have chosen the rifle if it was a 270 or 308.
I'm excited because it's my 1st used rifle I've ever bought.
I am getting about $670 cash in my pocket after all is said and done
I know maybe I should have kept the 338, but I still would've got the same amount cash back by keeping the 338 and not buying the 30-06, but this way I got a more shootable caliber for the range and an excuse to buy a 375 H&H later when money isn't so tight.
They did have a rem 700 adl in 270 win for $300 but the barrel didn't look nearly as nice as the older rem I got and it didn't have the nice wod stock and super slick action. so I spent $100 more and got a lot better rifle
