I have a Rem 700 in 300 ultra mag and am considering having the barrel shortened. It has a 26 inch factory barrel and with the muzzle brake it is about 29 inches which makes it a little bit unhandy. It rarely makes it out of the safe because of it's behemoth length and I thought it might get a little more play if it was more comfortable to carry and use. My question is, other than the inherent loss of velocity, are their other drawbacks to having say 2.5 to 3 inches lopped off the end?
Any input would be much appreciated.

Muzzleblast. I had a brake on mine until I shot it once without ear protection. I got rid of the brake. Recoil is temporary, hearing loss is forever.

Dump the corncob, that gun don't kick.

loose the brake. it will take the length of the gun down and you will loose weight off the muzzle. if it kicks too hard then mabe you should sell it and get something you can shoot without the brake. but if you do shorten the barrel you are loosing any advantage the 300 ult gives you cause you cant burn all the podwer and youd be better off with a 300 win any way.

I'm in with the loose the break crowd. 300RUM isn't that bad at all -- IF you have a good stock design and a good recoil pad (Decelerator or Limbsaver).

Not to mention you need a decent tube length to burn all that powder!!!!!!!!!!

If you shorten the barrel back to 23 inches or so and then put the brake back on your head will feel like one of those suicide bombers detonated himself right next to you.

As other s have said, unscrew the brake. if you reload check Hodgdon data on 300 Wby for powders like Varget or H4895 and add a few grains for the 300 RUM. You will be in the area of top 30/06 loads plus a bit and mid 60s for powder weight.

You can cut off your barrel But It may not burn all of the powder. And I like my barrels 26" long. But each to his own. Thats how I see it.

Guys- Thanks for the input. I do believe that I am gonna have to lose the skirt, dump the brake and shoot it as it was made to be shot. As was pointed out, why bother carrying all that powder if I'm not gonna use it.

You should just get a gun bearer to carry the thing for you.

I took my Model 70 from 26" to 24" with no regrets.

I'd rather have a 28-30" barrel for my 300 RUM. Right now mine is 28" and I wish it were a little longer.
