ar corey.270 Win 160 Partition.
Have read this is a combination noted for shooting accurate groups.
Gun will not shoot TSX 140 accurately.
Looking at the 140 Accubond or the 160 Partition.

LRH270My old M70 shoots 160 Partitions right into the same group as 130 Sierra SPBTs.
That's a handy trick

jro45I would think that the 160gr bullet would be a little heavy for the 270 Win Mag. Unless you are talking slow velocity.
07 October 2008, 17:08
Jeff SullivanIn my limited reloading experience, I have found my 270's to be a little finicky to load for, but my guns did shoot the 160 gr Partitions very well though.
07 October 2008, 18:42
TumbleweedMine do too - I don't recall the exact load off hand, but it's Noslers "accuracy" load for that bullet, right out of the Nosler manual.
I like 'heavy for caliber' bullets, and I'll give up velocity for accuracy and high sectional density any day.

Me too.
160 gn Partitions arent that slow in 270 win, 2750 fps no problem with MRP anyway. They didnt shoot very well in my gun, but I only tried one load so far.
07 October 2008, 21:21
seafire2I run those 160 Partitions right at 2950 fps out of my 270 in a Model 70 with a 24 inch barrel...
so I would not fret too much over lack of velocity....
even 2750 fps is more than enough velocity to get most any job you need done out of that bullet...
I love the old SMP style bullet that Nosler use to have a lot of in their line.. all that is left now is the 160 grain partition in 270, and the 220 grain SMP Partition in 30 cal...
of course both of those are far and above my preferred partitions of choice...

k-22hornetAre you seating the TSX deep? Barnes says to start at .050 off the lands. Also, have you tried the 130gr TSX?

Tried .030 for (10) Audette stacked and .070 for (10) Audette stacked. 8-11" pattern @ 275.

Yea.
Shot 100. Not as inaccurate but not acceptable for Mule Deer. Would prefer 140-160 gr. weight for Elk and Moose too. My rifle will shoot Red Hornady SP 140 and 150 precise, accurate and stable. The TSX brand, unfortunately, poorly.
The 140 Accubond or 160 Partition should match my need.

DocLoad the 150 partition over 4831 or Re22 and be done with it

Thomas Joneswhats rong with the hornady ?
If your rifle shoots them well, use them .
a 150 grain hornady would be a good bullet for elk.

k-22hornetI use a 130gr TSX in my 270. With my powder of choice, RL22, I just exceed 3200fps (safely), but I get horizontal stringing. SO, I went back to H4831sc and 60.5gr gets me about 3125fps and m.o.a.. H4350 was also accurate.
I would urge you to try .050, and change in .005 increments. If it still won't shoot, you can never go wrong with a Partition, but, nothing penetrates like a Barnes.

LWDI agree. Start at the .05 mark and see what they does. You could easily be missing the sweet spot. Also, how many powders did you try with the Barnes?

Had used H4831, H4831SC & IMR 4350.
Tried IMR 4831 yesterday and with 55.0 gr the TSX 140 shot good. Seated at .070 off, 0.412" @ 100.
Happy now.

Mike1I've tried the 160gr but could only get small groups using "accuracy loads" i.e. about 2400fps.
Seafare: what powder are you using to get that kind of velocity with the 160gr?

snowmanI've loaded 160 gr bullets in a 270. One of my uncles used that load for years on moose and elk. Most loading manuals list 2900 fps as max for the 150 gr. With the old H4831 it was possible to get 2750- 2800 fps with the 160's but that was max. anything higher must be at pretty high pressures.

bwestIf your rifle shoots them well then you really have something there. Always cracks me up to read someones post from an address with few if any elk or moose around talking about the cannons needed to take such beasts.
Earlier this fall I killed a 59" 202 B&C bull moose with ,oh no , a lowly 270 winchester. It did the job well at 370 yards according to my l
Leica rangefinder. I guess he just hadnt read some of the posts here.
Point is a bullet in the thorax from anything reasonable is deadly. The Dene and Inuit people live off game taken almost exclusively with the 303 British. A 30-06 to them is a huge and powerful rifle good only for grizzly bears.I think we could all learn something from that as they kill far more game than any of us do.
15 October 2008, 00:22
AtkinsonI used to shoot the Nosler 160 in my .270 and at about 2800 FPS it killed on par with the 180 gr. 30-06, nuff said..
It was an accurate bullet for sure.

The 7 X 57, .270 Win, .280 Rem. and 30-06 are all the same gun; Powerful and deadly.
Reading Jack O'Connor showed me the advantage of the 7mm Rem. Mag over the .270 Win.: "25 yards"

That must be one hot load !!! I was having pressure signs in my .270 win with a 140 grain at 2850 fps.

Jimmy P CoaltrainHow about a 140 partition? I would look that way over the accubond if you are seeking penetration.
17 October 2008, 01:48
AtkinsonFor deer I only use 130 gr. bullets, the partition is a good one and I have used it a lot..but the 130 gr. corelokt is also and excellent bullet as are most of the 130 gr. bullets..The Silvertip being the softest, but it kills like a lightening bolt, I just don' trust it..
For elk I will go with a 150 gr. nosler Partition at about 2950 to 3000 FPS..I have no trouble getting that kind of velocity with my old surplus powder that Jack O'Connor recommended..I use his load of 60 grs. of that stuff..I will soon use my supply up and I suspect that RL-22 will come pretty close to it. So will Norma MRP..The newer 4831s will not.
