Just wonder if sanyone knows anything about the 348 winchester lever action. My grandpa recently past and I received 68 rifles including this old lever action 348 with a peep sight on it, its in absolut excelent condition I dont know if he ever shot it. I remember saying he had an elephant gun LOL that was his way of making a joke i know its not an elephant gun but this must of been what he was talking abou tits the biggest caliber in the whole arsenal. Model 70 I believe just curious if anyone has any info on it.

My favorite cartridge. The rifle (M71) came out in 1936 (don't think any got into hunter's hands until 37. Only made for ~20 years (~56,000) The cartridge will drive a 200 grain bullet to ~2500fps and a 250 to ~2250fps. Depending on whether it is a long tang (early) or short tang (later) and the condition and items (sling swivels and/or original sling) and the condition, the gun could be worth from $2500 to possibly $4,000. All depends on who wants it more and condition, condition, and condition. They are getting just as collectable as the earlier Winchesters.

there is a sling on it but dont know if its the original or not I will have to get it checked out thanks for the info i will look at it better then post more.

The model 71 was the culmination of lever action rifles for Winchester. It is supposedly the best lever action they ever produced with the most powerful lever action cartridge at that time.

The Model 71 Winchester (then Browning in the late 80's) is the only rifle ever chambered for the 348 Winchester cartridge.

The value depending exactly what it is will easily be $1800 and in all probability much more.

If it is checkered, then it is a deluxe. I belive the sling would indicate a deluxe vs a standard model also. The bolt peep sight alone is probably worth $400-$500.

If you are into guns and hunting at all, I don't think you will want to get rid of that particualr rifle. If you do want to get rid of it. It will be absolutely no problem to sell.

If your not sure it has been fired, I wouldn't fire it! If unfired there is a premium to a collector, that could make the rifle worth considerably more! This rifle should be appraised by someone who is very knowledgable on Winchester rifles, and insured heavily!

Winchester's model 71 is king of the lever guns. Barnes still make their 250 grain "Original" bullet and with this bullet weight the 348 is a serious short range elk thumper. It will also generate enough recoil to make your eyes cross, but hey, there ain't no such thing as a free lunch!
