I am looking at a Savage 11 LW or Winchester model 70 LW compact for medium game hunting at medium to close range. Does one of these standout or is there something else in this price point that is worth a look?

Thank CD

Have a look at the new Remington mountain rifles. Light, accurate, durable, and reasonably priced.

Cz550 is in that price range, maybe a little less than the winchester.

I'm a big Remington fan too, but you may want to look at a Tika.

The Winchester M 70 LW is an oustanding hunting rifle. The .308 Winchester is a great all cartridege. Get that rig and hunt everything in the world just short of Cape Buffalo.

Can't go wrong with that gun!

Win M70 in a heartbeat for a hunting rifle.

I got a stainless synthetic Ruger Hawkeye and love it. Cannot think of a tougher rifle....

Either will do the job. I prefer the Winchester.

Nothing wrong with either rifle you are looking at. For whatever reason, I'm partial to the Ruger M77 Hawkeye in a short action rifle. My Ruger M77 358 Win stainless (all weather) is a favorite. It is a rugged little rifle that was accurate out of the box.

Nothing wrong with the suggestions, but I like a Model 70.

By the way, I've been shooting .308 a great deal over the past two seasons and it works just great. It's a great rifle out to about 250 yards on most of the plains game short of the really big stuff.

I did get a Winchester model 70, but I selected the Extreme Weather SS. I have around 70 rds through it...it seems to like 180gr Fusion the best so far. Thank you for everyone's input.

Great choice MM. Enjoy a lifetime of hunting with that rifle.
