Hi I want to buy a Weatherby Vanguard Sinthetyc in principle wanted caliber rifle 300 Weatherby Magnum, but I have a Remington 700 in 338 caliber Winchester Magnum. vapodogWhat are we hunting?.....it makes a lot of difference in what we buy.
For deer only the .270 WSM gets my vote.....if we add moose and elk.....the .300 WBY is the better choice.
As time marchesd on, I'm finding less and less use for a .257 Wby.....pronghorns and coyotes seem to fit however.

phurley5I am a huge fan of the .270 WSM, presently shooting two and hunting another (my grandsons are also crazy about them). I already shoot a .257 Wby and consider it perfect for pronghorns, etc. With the .270 WSM's I can get 3450 fps from a 130 grain North Fork with excellent accuracy that would handle many animals. Good shooting.

CAS III've had all and only had the desire to get rid of the 270 WSM. Regardless of what anyone says, the WSM rounds will just never feed as well as an H&H based round will.
If deer was the largest animal on the menu, I'd choose the 257. Other than that it is hard to beat the 300 Roy for all around versatility.

Hi and thank you. I have a 338 Winchester Magnum and I think is a good caliber for moose. In Spain we do not have moose (unfortunately because I love it), we only have deer, wild boar, roe deer, chamois, etc ... and as I said for the more bulky than the 338 WM think is appropriate.
Thanks,
Oscar.

Thank you very much, is a cartridge that I am taking into account also the price difference, as the Weatherby cartridges are very expensive.

buffybrOscar,
My first choice would have been the .300 Weatherby. I finally got myself one a couple of years ago, and love it.
However I primarily got it as an elk rifle, and hopefully I'll use it in the future in Africa and New Zealand.
I read all the posts on your thread before I voted, and saw that you will primarily be hunting in Spain, therefore I voted for the .257 Weatherby.
I have a .257 AI that has been my favorite deer, pronghorn antelope and sheep rifle for the past 30 years. If I didn't have the Ackley, I would get a .257 Weatherby.
You commented that Weatherby cartridges are very expensive. Yes they are, but if you handload, once you buy the brass, the cost to reload is about the same as many other cartridges.

MileHighShooterOscar,
I know Weatherby ammo is very expensive here, I imagine it must be VERY expensive in Europe for you. If the 270wsm is available, you are not giving up anything to the 257 Wby. Federal factory loads the 110gr TSX at an incredibley fast speed, don't remember what the speed is off hand. It also has the benefit of bigger bullets. Very flexible cartridge. I have a 300 Wby myself, it is a great cartridge. But there is nothing it can do that your 338 cannot do, big overlap.
If you think every possible niche has been filled already, thank a wildcatter!

Lloyd Smalenot a big fan of weatherby rifles. Ive had a few in the past but the stocks just dont agree with me. I do have a vanguard in 257 though and just love that round and would never part with that gun. It kills deer like they were struck by lighting.

ovnyHello all your answers are greatly appreciated. I have found an increase in votes for the two Weatherby calibers. I consider the 300 Weatherby caliber versatile as they come. My doubt is dispelled and I may continue with the idea of buying the Vanguard in this superb cartridge. However consider the issue a bit critical of the choice of bullets, especially considering that in Spain we have very little variety of bullets for this cartridge.
Thanks to all

Dr. LouThe 300 Bee would be first choice if you didn't already have a 338 WM, but since you do I would definitely go with the 257 Bee.

Bernie P.So long as that Weby has the barrel length to burn all that powder I'd go with the .257.If not I'd just get a 25-06.

jaegerfrankRe availability of NF Bullets in Europe: unfortunately so far I cannot share this statement at all, I am trying to get bullets from Sweden to Germany without any success so far. I would appreciate if this situation would improve of course.

Antelope Snipera .277 and a .338 make a great pair.

Hopefully NF Bullets bullets were available for Europe shortly. If you can find out anything please feel free to post it on the forum (if you can.)

Lloyd Smale257 all the way. Its not the best choise for animals over 500lbs but for anything under that it kills like the arm of thor and you have a 338 allready for the bigger stuff.
30 January 2011, 16:56
30378Of the calibers you list I voted for the 257 Wby but do not overlook the 270 Wby. It out performs bothe 270 calibers you suggest and is a slight step up from the 257. The 270 Wby is a great hunting caliber.

ovnyUf, as you can see I chose the 300 Weatherby, maybe I made a mistake but I had always wanted a 300 Weatherby.
Regards,

PS: And I have an excuse to buy a single shot rifle in a caliber smaller

hehe.

MileHighShooterOscar you did not make a wrong choice amigo! There is NOTHING wrong with the 300 Wby

Maybe you should get another identical rifle in 257 Wby? Then you can have a nice matched pair and with your 458 Lott, there isn't anything in the world you're not ready for

The 300 is my favorite Weatherby.

I also wanted a 270 Weatherby, but it is the Weatherby Vanguard in the cartridge and the Mark V is too expensive. So in the end I chose the 300 Weatherby.

John303.About 35 years ago I bought a custom .300 Weath., which I sold, it was quite light and brutal. When the Ruger #1 came out chambered for the cartridge I purchased one and have had it ever since. IMHO, with proper loadings it will handle about anything in NA. The Ruger (at least to me) being heavier makes the recoil less punishing. --- John303.

The Vanguard is heavy thanks to God, however I will share my feeling to shoot him. So far I have fired rifles have been my Remington 700 of 338 Winchester Magnum and my Ceska the 375 H & H and I have similar unpleasant.

buffybrOscar,
I hope you will enjoy your .300 Wby. I got mine a couple of years ago, and it is one of my favorite rifles.
To tame the recoil of my .300 Wby (and also my .375 RUM) I had a KDF muzzle brake installed on them, and I installed mechanical recoil reducers in their stocks. I also put Limbsaver recoil pads on them.
Each one of these devices will reduce some of the rifle's felt recoil. The addition of all three of them took a major portion of the recoil out of these rifles.

BiebsOscar, Nice rifle! Go shoot something with it! If it too much recoil, just have a muzzle brake put on it. If you have Weatherby dealer there, they have an address of a nearby gunsmith who is authorized by Weatherby to add their Accubrake.
02 February 2011, 11:30
ovnyBut, does the 300 Weatherby hit in the shoulder much?. When I try the gun I'll tell you what I found and if I have any teeth lol.
Regards,
Oscar.
PD: I imagine that its recoil will be less than the 375 H & H.

swaincreekbuffbr , just purchased a 300 weatherby Vanguard, checked the limbsaver web site and it seemed that the vanguard stock was too narrow for the limsaver selections available. Could you please tell me which limsaver number worked for you ??
05 February 2011, 17:26
ovnyHello, certainly, my Weatherby Vanguard takes an excellent gum corner piece, I believe that I am no going to have problems at the time of shooting. The recoil will be bearable (more than my children when they fight insurance).
A greeting,
Oscar.

Captain FinlanderYou clearly have the magnums covered so the caliber you should consider next is a 260 remington or 270 winchester. Both non-magnums but will perform on par ballistically but with less energy. You will find that once you aquire one and use it on deer and boer you will not feel the need for the magnums.

You are right, I am blinded by the cartridges magnum and hence I do not go out jeje. It is already late to buy a rifle in cartridge not magnum (at least at the moment). Perhaps in a future I appeared a soft cartridge, to enjoy moreover of the event, and to see where it impresses the bullet (since I am afraid that with 300 Weatherby I will not see).

TC1I've spent a little time behind a .300WBY Vanguard (Walmart special) and didn't like it one bit. The rifle very accurate but the stock just didn't fit me and the recoil was punishing.
I like the the .257WBY but in the Vanguard for some reason they put a 24" barrel on it. I know it works but if I'm going over bore with a hotrod like the .257WBY I would want everything I can gan get out of it and would want a 26" tube.
Not a fan of WSM's but if I was going to get one the .270 would be the one. Now correct me if I'm wrong but, if I'm not mistaken all Weatherby Vanguards are long actions. Kinda rules that out for me.
Given the choices the .257WBY would be the one for me. I could learn to like the short barrel.
