gtrotz.270 Win with unusual weight bullets
Hi:
I bought a lot of old bullets of .277 diam.
Never saw before Speer 170 gr RN and Sierra 90 gr hollow point.
Have anyone used some of them in a 270 win?
Which was the result ?
Thank's
Gtrotz

plainsman456Way back when i got my 270 win ,I was given 2 boxes of Federals with 170gr bullets.I was looking for some brass so i shot them up on a pd hunt.Needless to say they worked but kicked like hell.I wished now that i saved them cuz they are hard to find. They should work on whatever you hunt with them.As for the 90gr i used some hornaday's and they hit like a thunderbolt on coyotes.Good Luck

buckeyeshooterAt one time Barnes made 180 grain RN in .277. Still have a couple boxes somewhere in the basement.

seafire2I have loaded some of those 90 grainers ( from Sierra) in a 270 for a young kid, a scouting buddy of my son's..... behind a charge of 28 grains of SR 4759...
it is more than adequate for Oregon Blacktail at the 150 yds or less he will be shooting at...

enfieldsparesI will look at my old Lyman Reloading Book which has results. These are a good bullet where you want to copy a 7 x 64 or 7mm Mauser loading in a 270 Winchester.
I am a great fan of some of these "overweight" bullets. That is bullets that are long for their given calibre. I think that they perform very well.

gtrotzDo you think that the twist of a 270 will stabilize those 170 grainers?

Probably need at least 1 in 10" twist.

TEANCUMA long time ago when my safe was not packed with rifles and the 270 was the go to gun I loaded up some 90 grain Sierras to do the varmint hunting thing.
They were ok but not the greatest in the accuracy department for a varmint rig. But with a 22" Ruger M77 it may not have been the bullet. That rifle was ok for big game hunting and took a lot of deer and elk but never did better than 2" at 100 yards in the accuracy department.
I soon moved on to a 22-250 and never returned to the 90 grainers. If that's all you have for a varmint type rig, if that's what you are looking for, they will do just ok. IMHE

rolltopO've used both the 90 grain and the 170 grain bullets but actually believe I gained nothing over the standard 100 and 150 grain offerings.
Both worked but to what advantage I never figured out.

CurtissI have used the Sierra 90 gr HP as a varmint round for something like 30 years as it has proven extremely accurate in 3 diff 270's. It was pretty easy to load to around 3300-3500fps with any of several "normal" 270 powders. Shot 1 deer with it, damage was extensive.
I have never shot the 170 gr RN, but it might be good woods medicine if it shot well out of your rifle. I have a box of them for sale on Gunbroker.
