Looking for opinions on the McMillan rifles. How smooth, does the bolt clear the objective on the scope easily? and just general feedback.

Wouldn't that be determined by the size of the ocular and the height of the rings?

I had a rifle built on a short Mcbros action. My action was to tight for field use. the slightest amount of dust,dirt or grime would cause very hard bolt travel and lock up. It seemed mine was set up to benchrest tolerences which made it very suspect in the field. Very nice actions from a quality standpoint. If you get one have them spec it a little looser for field use if that is your intention.

j stoviak, good intel, this is the kind of stuff I am looking to learn. Using 2 lug bolts I often find that the bolt angle and length (too short) cause my fingers to hit the ocular bell of the scope, Ocular lenses vary slightly IME, but I work the bolt with both fingers on the bolt throughout the bolt cycle, and on somne remington style actions it just ain't a go proposition for me.

It was a 30-'06 Marine Sniper with the very distinctive McMillan Marine Sniper stock. The guy said he could finally afford a decent hunting rifle so he ordered his in 30-'06.
Glad I decided to go to the public range that day...

Not a McMillan, but it is designed after the ORIGINAL McMillan's and it has a McMillan stock.

The workmanship & finish is excellent on those actions., and are made from topgrade 17-4 stainless.
I did find it strange to see two ejector systems on the one G30 action.(plunger & blade eject)

..or ask if they could supply a G30 without plunger ejector.

Interesting TRAX, I was thinking of a custom caliber, but don't know if that is attainable--it is geting a litle tough to source good actions IME, so I'm thinking of a complete build from someone like McBros.

If U appreciate McMillan qual., you may also like to investigate SURGEON Rifles.
They do 700 type custom receiver with, integral recoil lug, integral picatinny base, integral bolt handle,side bolt release, super precise manufactured & shotpeened receiver..... google them up.
Maybe if you supply reamers MCMillan or Surgeon will accomodate you custom calibre...no harm in asking.
Ive only inspected McMlln rifles, but would not hesitate to throw money at a Surgeon, heard only good words. IIRC, they have a 2.9" internal box area.
If your after a 700 type short action hunting stock, Id seriously look at WildDog. They make a really tuff rigid unit for sa700. Its my pick over a McMillan.

Trax, I have a Surgeon, it is a fine rifle. The bolt still needs a lot of shooting to get it smooth enough to suit me, I think it's probably just because it is so tight (from a tolerance standpoint)--having said that, the smoothest bolts I have are on Sauer 202's, and the tolerances on them are DAMN tight.

Surgeon is going to producing only complete rifles for sale, and turned down my last --pretty simple request to build a custom, all I wanted that they didn't do on my first surgeon was 300 Dakota as caliber, everything else was cool, but they took a pass....was excited about the BAT actions in three lug, but not available in a repeater----shoot!

Modern day Mannlichers are smooth also. I bought a 30-06 prof. simply cause I could not resist the slick feel of it...the spiral flats on the outside of the barrel look cool too..
If you decide on aMcmillan receiver, surely you could get a rifle built by a competent smith for less than what Mc charges, and no less a rifle in the process.

With rifle actions, there are a lot of good choices in the market. You really need to decide what features you really do and do not want.

I own a Surgeon action in a tactical rifle and it is very nice. I'm building another rifle on a Jerry Stiller "Viperaction" (TAC-338). The McMillan and Nesika actions are in the same class in terms of quality. All make actions for Benchrest shooting and the field. It's important to tell the manufacturer how you will use their action so it has the correct tolerances for your intended use.

Sid, spot on! I am still trying to find a 3 lug repeater, from one of the top makers such as you mentioned. The BAT action makes a 3 lug, but not in a repeater, at least not yet.....

I can tell you, the one Nesika I have fired (as opposed to just fondling actions) was incredibly
smooth, but my clumsy fingers on the bolt the whole time style cause be to smash my thumb against the ocular of the scope. I really don't know why a little longer bolt handle wouldn't cure the issue, but I haven't read a gunsmithing 101 book, which I really need to do....any ideas on a book........

Check out the Badger Ordnance M2008. 3 lug repeater. Have not seen one but keep hearing they are real nice.
