Help me out here guys. For a hot .308 what are my better choices than a Lazzaronni Savage in .308 Patriot? By the way money is an object. Say under $800 & I don't like monie carlo stocks.

300 WSM is the way to go for the dollar and good accuracy. With Lazzoroni stuff you have to buy his brass.......Whoooo!.... is that stuff expensive. Several manufactors offer the WSM all seem to be shooting well.

You might want to shop around a little for the Savage 16-LZ. It is priced in the $700 range sans scope. Chamberings are the .284 Tomahawk and the .308 Patriot - the "original" short mags. Sako is also chambering for the Lazzeroni .308 Warbird in the $900 range sans scope in their TRG-S rifle. Chuck is correct about ammo pricing, however, as more folks pick up the Sako and Savage, pricing will continue to drop.

With the demand less than expected for the WSM and the RSM, you might find a shop willing to cut you a deal on a Win or Rem. You will also find a few guns already on the resell market with very low "milage". Actual performance results on the short mags were a little less than expected.

Rechamber an 06 to 30-338 and get the most out of the .308.

how does the 30.338 compare to the patriot?

Zero Drift: Is the Savage worth 700+ accuracy? straight pull stock or monte carlo?

I don't have any experience with the Lazeronni cartridges. However, if you can obtain a reloading manual that has data for the 308 Norma Magnum, the 30-338 Win Mag is almost identical to the 308 Norma.

I load my 30-338 to near 300 Wby ballistics.

I don't remember the exact velocity for the Patriot but I think it is a little faster thean the 3100 fps I can get with the 30-338. The rechamber cost me about $80. I have settled on 70 gr. of 4350 with the 165gr. Sierra and been very happy with the accuracy.

With a 24" barrel you shouldn't have any problem reaching 3150 fps with the 180 grain
Nosler Partition...higher with lubed bullets. I have a Patriot built on the McMillan action and it is a real shooter. I especially love the Lazzeroni brass...it isn't cheap but it's very high quality and with proper care seems to last forever (I anneal every 5th reload)....if price is a concern, and you like the idea of the short case I would stick with either the WSM or RSAUM...depending on whose rifle you liked better.

THMPR-I think that is a great idea. While I was guiding for coues deer in Mexico this winter John Lazz was in camp. Over a mesquite fire I asked him about the Sav/Lazz combo.
His comments was something to this effect,not an exact quote but it'll be close.

The Savage will shoot with of his top end Lazz rifles at a fraction of a cost.

They do interest me, personally I think the Savage is one of the most underrated rifles out there.
