vegard_dinoA 8*57JS carabin, how are they.... Just a big blast..??Or..?
Hi all.
A local dealer have a nice old Mannlicher rifle in 8*57JS. A nice gun and a good caliber.
But, the barrel is only 20" long..short. (49 cm).
Great for handling in thick cover and so....But, how are a rifle with a barrel THAT short really to use?? Just a GRAET muzzle blast and more noise and on top of that loosing a lot of FPS?
I have never had or used a rifle that short, interesting to learn about them, pro and cons.

igorrockSuch a short barreled rifle in this caliber is very usefull when you hunt places where the ordinary shooting distances are less than 100 metres.

vegard_dinoOh yes, it is a short range gun, but how much FPS do you give up?

coniferNO PROBLEM!!!
I have 3 of same carbine in 8x57, 30-06 and 257 Roberts. Accuracy is better than my ability. Noise is (seems to be) no worse than from a longer barrel. Use it and enjoy it. The values of those mannlicher carbines grow each year.

xausaThe secret with short barrels is fast burning powder with heavy bullets. This should be no problem with an 8X57IS. Cartridges like the .270 and the 7X64 are the real ear splitters.

Austin HunterI have a 8x57 with a 20" barrel; shoots 200 grain Accubonds at around 2,400 fps. Took at Waterbuck at 160 yards.
